The planet's puppet masters almost surely have a plan There's clearly maybe something there beyond the realm of man And until we've thoroughly tested, close-chested I find the more we think we know, the less we... Well, it is a beautiful day in the neighborhood, people. From the Sunshine State, I'm Greg Carlwood. And for over a hundred years, we've been under a pretty relentless assault to sell the industrialized system as progress over our crude and primitive natural ways. But our bodies have fundamental needs, and most of the important ones have no man-made substitutes. Despite the sales pitch, most human problems can't be solved with petrochemical pills or invasive surgery, nor should you treat the luxury of electric light as a free pass to ignore your biological rhythm, or the comfort of rubber-soled shoes as a reason to never let your bare feet touch the energizing earth. And although the relentless list of obligations and never-ending economic pressures we're under cause us to cave to the convenience of prepackaged, ultra-processed factory frankenfoods, most of it contains not much more of what our body needs or wants than the packaging it came in. Well, the breakneck pace of industrialized capitalism has seen more than a few health-degrading effects swept under the rug, and a recent inquiry into the fact that the San Francisco 49ers far and away lead the league in injuries, coupled with their stadium's tight proximity to a large electrical substation, finally has a fair amount of people asking if excessive EMF exposure might be a new example of one of those things. And much of the discourse over this possibility spirals out of a series of substack posts written by today's guest Peter Cowan, which include his own first-hand EMF meter readings of the area, a history of our outdated regulations, and a lot more information that all builds a pretty good case that this nearby substation and the team's excessive injuries are likely related. He's a Peter of many trades as the founder of Sunlight Is Life, a company that provides software tools for light and sun exposure optimization, and living energy wellness, where he practices as a board-certified quantum biology practitioner. He is a software developer, pianist, and composer as well, and I look forward to getting into this story. The injury mystery solver, 49ers knight in shining armor, and champion of the sun, Peter, welcome to THC. Thanks for having me, Greg. Great introduction, by the way. I try, I try. And I know you're blowing up right now, so I appreciate you doing this with me. Joe Rogan's talking about it. The general manager of the team is being asked about it. You're on some sports shows, but today you're with the humble stoner dropout doing a show from a spare bedroom, so I am honored. Well, just to be clear, I'm also a high school dropout, so we share that. Oh, one of my own. I love it. I failed at becoming a stoner, though, so you beat me on that. Oh, man. Well, the bar is pretty low for success in that field. I don't know, man. I really failed. We can talk about that later if you want. Oh, man. All right. Well, obviously, the big offering on the table is the 49ers thing. I'm not much of a sports guy, but I am interested in EMF exposure and real-world case studies of high-level EMF exposure, and this is one of them. Talk to us about this. How did this really get on your radar? Was it really hearing this clip, I believe, from your substack? It seemed to be you heard one of the players saying that there's a long-running locker room joke that maybe it has something to do with their excessive injuries. Yeah, it was John Feliciano. He's an ex-49er, and to be clear, I'm not a huge sports guy either. I do love watching NFL just because aesthetically, it's very like the old NFL films. It's a nice thing to watch, and it's chaos. Everybody's got helmets on. You can't tell who's who. It's just a release. But yeah, I don't know much about NFL beyond that. But yeah, John Feliciano, he's just a well-loved ex-49er who's always on the Bay Area radio shows, and people just know that Niners as having really high injury rates. If you're into fantasy football, you always know if you've got a 49er, you're like, oh, you better be keeping my eye on whoever. I don't even know actually how fantasy football works, so something about that. So he clearly was joking when he said, you know, I think it might be that electrical substation, and the host laughed. But then he goes on, you know, there's some very, very high-level players in the organization who take this substation seriously, and he's like, I think it might have to do with the thyroid or something, and they do a lot of these really special practices to mitigate against the effects of it. And so that, just the juxtaposition of those two things, of him joking, and then being like, actually, it's serious, made me think, okay, sounds like people think this is a joke, but the players are taking it seriously, but nobody else is taking them seriously, so I'm going to take them seriously. And the one thing I wanted to add to that, though, is I had gone to a Niners game back in 2022, and you cannot miss that substation. And it's just, it's massive, and you go up the back steps, and it's just like, you know those things, they're buzzing, and they're just like, feels weird, you know? Yes. So that, yeah, that's what really got me onto the story, and I should say that I was turned onto that story by this journalist named Chase Sr., and he posted about it, and I follow a lot of people who are really in EMF on X, and some people who are super, like, electro-hypersensitive, and just to get that perspective, and there's this one guy that he shared it, and I didn't know that it actually had gone super viral. I caught it when it was in his first 10,000 views or so, and so I thought, oh, that's interesting. This football guy is writing about this, and he got a bunch of details kind of wrong, but, and everybody was calling him a conspiracy there, so that's cool. I'm going to run with it. Yeah. Well, I appreciate that you did, and I figured, so I will just add a photo, the aerial shot, of the stadium area because, yeah, the substation is right there. There's a correlation that no team has this many injuries, and no team is playing so often this near a substation. You can look at all the stadiums out there. None of them are this near to an EMF-emitting power station, and I wanted to, I think it'd be fun to share this little clip. This is the general manager talking about the situation. You know this, but for the people, we'll let them hear it. You know, what I would tell you, Eric, because it deals with, allegedly, you know, the health and safety of our players, I think you have to look into everything, and so our guys have been. We've been reaching out to anyone and everyone to see does a study exist other than a guy sticking an apparatus underneath the fence and coming up with a number that I have no idea what that means. You know, that's what we know exists. We've heard that debunk. You know, so yes, we will look into it. We have. The health and safety of our players is of the utmost priority. We pour into it. Our ownership, Jed, tremendous in terms of resources, and we'll always be cognizant of things. I know that a lot of games have been won at this facility, you know, since it opened. And, you know, and so, but yeah, we aren't going to turn a blind eye. We'll look into everything. Yeah, so I just love that because it's so typical of the attitude, the dismissal of these things. You mentioned the guy joking. You say at one point, we joke about the things that we can't comfortably just bring up, and that is so true. And it's just, you know, he's being a little shitty. We need more than some guys sticking a meter under the fence and getting some reading. I don't know what the hell the number means. Well, God forbid you learn something, man. I mean, at least I'm smart enough to know what I don't know and know that there are EMF readers and these numbers that they come up with do have some significance. Talk to us about that. Talk to us about actually going there and the less dismissive shitty version of the story that he gave there. I will, but let me just say, though, I think there really is something to you about the fact that if people keep this in the joke realm, they have more freedom to actually address it. So it wasn't on the clip, but like the reporter who asked the question, he took like 45 seconds to ask the question. He's like, you know, I think it's probably been debunked. I know that's really ridiculous, but before he even said anything, it was just like, everybody's so afraid to touch it and he hasn't reached out. You know, he says we've reached out to everybody. He hasn't reached out to me. Like nobody's reaching out to me except for the Stoner High School dropout with the awesome podcast, you know, and I'm kind of the foil here. So it's just kind of how things work and like I don't even think of it as shitty. I just think it as like that's the status quo and like that's what you deal with until the status quo changes. But just to give more context to actually answer your question, I went there with my dad on the way to airport after Thanksgiving. I was down in the Bay Area and I was like, Dad, you want to go check out the substation thing and he's an electrical engineer and he got excited and we made a plan and I was going to go with him and then we're going to go meet my daughters and my mom at In-N-Out Burger and then go to the airport. But we get there and my plan, like I couldn't go exactly where I wanted to go because there was like gates and stuff. So we had to find another place and then there's guards there and they're nice but they're very much just like, you know, I can't answer your questions and like stay away. So I found a place to look. It wasn't ideal and I could tell that there was magnetic fields all over the place. I really wanted to get the one that was closest to the facility so I was measuring a lot higher than I showed on my gauss meter which was about 8.9 or something like that. But then shortly after my dad started having some health issues and I didn't take him to the doctor so it just, it went real quick. But for context, like for some guy sticking an apparatus under a fence and getting an 8.9 milligauss, what does that mean? Well, in a normal like residential exposure, you're going to have like about 0.5 milligauss to maybe up to like 9, 10, maybe even 15 if you live under some high voltage power lines but not a ton of people really do. And then just as far as like health concerns go, there's European countries that cut it off at 4 milligauss for residential exposure. And the reason they do that is because there's a lot of studies from the 70s that showed around 3 milligauss childhood leukemia becoming an issue. So double what a lot of countries are calling their cap. And this is just one random reading on a day where you say far from peak load. I mean, this is a quiet Monday. They probably don't have everything turned on. And this isn't like the team plays there once in a while. This is right near their practice field. And this is their job. So their exposure is routine and very frequent. I think it's like six days a week for chumps of the year where they're there for either training or recovery or watching films or all the things they do. That's their place. And the facilities are closer to the substation than the field by a large margin. So in your first piece you say the EMF hypothesis here fits like a glove. It's the one variable no other team faces at this intensity and the injury pattern collagen-rich failures and tendons and junctions matches the exact biological disruptions documented in peer-reviewed research. Talk to us about that research and these specific injuries conforming to it. I think the specific injuries is really important because I'll get misquoted as saying that they have the most injuries of any team when I don't know if they actually have the most injuries of any team. I'm specifically looking at collagen-based like tendon soft tissue injuries and even more importantly the non-contact kind. So I called out one specific injury Dre Greenlaw at the Super Bowl like a year or two ago. He tore his Achilles a tendon just running on the sideline into the field. He tore it before he got into the field no contact it was just like jumping and then running. It's really that kind of thing and there's specific in my article I highlight a specific set of injuries like angle syndemosis and that sort of thing and so injuries could be like you know like a bone break or like a muscle strain and a concussion whatever those things don't really fall into this category. so I just want to be clear about that because I have people like debunking me that's not even my argument I could be wrong but let's at least like talk about the same thing so I think you know I get into some pretty deep mechanisms here but I think from a high level just from a kind of high level biophysics perspective are you familiar with the mitochondria? I've heard of it you've heard of it yeah so what's your what's your take on the mitochondria? do you have one? well just I hear about this from Dr. Jack Cruz's work and a lot of the easy water stuff as well as the light stuff but the mitochondrial is part of your DNA and it's like obviously very important and seems to be regulated by sunlight largely you already have more of an understanding than most people so that's great and I'll just for the listeners that maybe don't know let's just say like if you ever took a high school anatomy class you learned that mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell and they generate some energy it's called ATP it's a molecule and so that's a kind of like the classic biochemical understanding of mitochondria is it generates ATP and then water and carbon dioxide are byproducts and the free radicals more precisely radical oxygen species are kind of like the exhaust and so like if the mitochondria aren't running effectively they're creating more free radicals and that can eventually lead to something called oxidative stress which breaks down your cells and causes disease this whole story right here is not controversial at all if you go to any like biomedical biochemical journal they're gonna just say yeah that's 100% right so when we get into biophysics though the water is not a byproduct it's actually perhaps the most important product of the mitochondria maybe even more so than ATP but you know let's just say it's very important and there is a reciprocal relationship between the radical oxygen species and the water so the more radical oxygen species that are being produced the less water so my high level thesis looked at the work of a Canadian doctor named Paul Perrault who has studied specifically magnetic fields and their effect on the mitochondria and he's shown that so the mitochondria basically what they do you mentioned light but let's stick to the simple biochemical story real quick is they take food and turn it into electrons and then the electrons transport across the inner membrane of the mitochondria and there's protons from hydrogen that go to a different place and that kind of creates like a battery effect and then when you have electrons moving you get a magnetic field so it's creating its own endogenous electromagnetic field and so what Paul Perrault discovered is that there's one of the four laws of electromagnetism from James Maxwell Plerk he's a physicist from the 1800s was that if you superimpose one electromagnetic field onto another you will alter the field so basically we've got on the mitochondria this very high frequency field and we're overlaying it a very low frequency field and so the way I like to visualize it is that if you were to drop a pebble in a pond you've got the tiny little ripples and then let's say a boat came by from far away you get these big waves and so when you're at the bottom of the wave the ripples are kind of getting compressed and we're at the top they're getting stretched and so think of that electromagnetic field in your mitochondria as getting stretched and compressed and you're losing electrons when you lose electrons you get more radical oxygen species and less water which leads to dehydration at the cellular level and collagen happens to be 99.7% water and water is a structural component of the collagen as you mentioned we have easy water it's the metallic metabolic water that's actually more structured than typical like bulk water we call it that comes from a tap or something so basically we're dehydrating the athletes and it's causing the collagen to be weaker right and so the ligaments and tendons of your body that typically are supposed to stretch they're breaking instead they're rupturing because of this specific dehydration of the cell caused by this field exposure exactly and I think one more nice visual for people to imagine is if you've ever taken a rubber band or left it outside in the sun ah you know rubber bands are very stretchy but like give it a couple days in the sun and you pull it and it just breaks that's the light doing it and so it's different that's a more direct mechanism of light doing that to rubber which I don't think is collagen based but it's the same idea you dehydrate a substance and it loses its flexibility yes I think that's a great visual so when we talked on the phone we got into the idea of a conspiracy here and of course I don't shy away from that word but a lot of folks in some of these interviews you've been doing particularly sports world they're just like they laugh off the whole thing as a conspiracy theory but to me it doesn't have to be some radical conspiracy it's just history is full of products used at large scale that turn out to be bad for health the industry covers it up as long as they can and only changes when they're forced to asbestos lead paint pesticides food additives non-stick cookware is another good category does EMF fit into this sort of pattern to you I think it does yeah and like you I'm like what's the conspiracy like is the substation conspiring with the patriots or something to injure the 49ers like yeah but you bring up a good point like there's economic interest involved in these things in sports teams and in electric infrastructure and if you want to expand it to the larger EMF question you know cell phone wifi bluetooth et cetera et cetera so there's a lot of economic interest in just keeping things as they are and I like that you mentioned asbestos because there was a journalist named Paul Broder who he exposed he was a I think he won whatever greatest prizes you can win for for journalism and he he really exposed the asbestos issue and then he went on to write about electromagnetic radiation and it just for some reason never quite caught on as much as that asbestos story so funny yeah yeah I saw you write about that and on the subject of the idea of a cover-up you did tweet a clip of one of the players joking that the substation gave him superpowers and you say his joke echoes the science Robert O. Becker and Andrew Marino documented that EMF effects are non-linear same exposure can harm one person barely touch another and even enhance function in a third industry used this variable this variability to rig studies because you take the average of wildly different outcomes together and you get quote no consistent effect he inadvertently mirrors with this joke exactly how the science was buried so interesting I mean that's wild tell us a little bit more about burying this information or fixing these studies in this way before I talk about it I'm just going to show you that book because I happen to have it right here it's called Going Somewhere and it's by Dr. Andrew Marino and he worked with Dr. Robert O. Becker who was just a pioneering researcher in bioelectricity basically an orthopedic surgeon his book The Body Electric is very hard to read but really good I have it back there somewhere I've tried I know it's I like summaries better than reading the actual text but yeah it's a hard one but I would say for that book for just your average reader if you're interested in like the varying of the science there's a chapter in the end called Something Thor's Hammer or something like that and it's just all about the studies that the government was doing with MKUltra and so on and so forth to use this kind of stuff for controlling people's behavior theoretically it's all documented so like if you want to talk conspiracy go read that book I can't I don't know all the details on that stuff myself but back to the question you asked about the variability so they discovered these issues and Andrew Marino was his biophysics assistant in the lab and he he was just like a research workhorse and it was his life goal to just have a study that shows directly harm caused by it doesn't even have to be harm just effect because what was happening is they would do these studies and let's say they'd take some rats and they'd expose them to some magnetic fields over time and then you know what they do is the rats have babies and then they expose the babies and you got like three generations down and often in the third generation like they're just these scrawny little weak things because they've been harmed by the electromagnetic radiation but because it's non-linear you'd get other populations that nothing happened at all and other ones where they grew bigger and so the industry would they'd take these three sets and then they'd average them together and say oh there's no effect and so there's a great clip from Robert Rebecca you can find it on YouTube and he's being interviewed by 60 Minutes I think it's Dan Rather even and he had been contracted to do some studying on an antenna that the Navy was going to build in Wisconsin a massive massive radio antenna to see if it would have health effects and he found that it would have health effects and he found that not only would the radio have health effects but the electricity in our homes you know and everything is going to have health effects and so he went on that show to kind of air his findings as the Navy shut down his report and Dan Rather is talking to me he says so you're telling me that whenever they do a study that finds negative health effects from electromagnetic radiation they shut it down and Becker says no anytime they have a study that shows any effect whatsoever they shut it down so there's your conspiracy theory and again though it's like we built the backbone of our economy on electricity and tech and stuff and it's I don't think it's going anywhere honestly so I'm not really an activist or anything I'm just I want people to be healthy and I think you know that's kind of where I was coming from this whole time yeah I think that's totally fair I eat fast food sometimes it is what it is but at least it's an informed decision I want to know what's going on if I choose to use my phone for eight hours a day at least don't lie to me and tell me that that's harmless because I'm okay with dealing with the consequences but I want the raw truth and so that's kind of what this is about totally and I didn't get into Robert O Becker's work until after he passed away but I did reach out to Andrew Marino a couple times and we talked about doing an interview he's a bit of a character and it just didn't come together but you have written about his lessons from the powerline wars this is an interesting little story that kind of informs the overall thesis here right yeah I think so for sure by the way I have done some emailing with him too he's a really interesting guy really really cool he gave me the best compliment I think I've ever received in my life he wrote me an email he says Peter in the 50 years that I've been doing this work you are the most insightful person I've come across wow yeah so I love that Andrew you just made my life he's kind of a hero of mine because you know he's a biophysics pioneer and in upstate New York when they were doing these long really high voltage transmission lines he was concerned about it because he knew about the health issues and he knew that the experts that they were getting that were getting paid for by you know the power companies and maybe to some extent the state government I don't remember that I think that there were actually at that time I think there were people in public office who were interested in the health effects more so than maybe they are now and he didn't think that they were going to get a good like hearing from their experts and so he went and got his law license while he was being a lab assistant for Robert Becker Becker gave him permission to go get his legal degree so he could represent them in this fight crazy totally crazy and I mentioned this in my subject but this guy he's such a badass and like he deserves so much credit and he basically he's being asked by a judge at one point like if you had to choose between living under these lines yourself knowing what you know or letting somebody else live under it what would you choose and I think the judge is trying to like kind of almost like a gotcha like thing and he says I'm going to go there with my family because I know how to mitigate the effects and somebody else doesn't and that's not fair to them right I remember him saying that and yeah it's a noble thing to say but the insight there is that there is something that can be done if people are listening to this and they happen to live under power lines well they're not going to be able to move maybe for years they have to plan up to make some kind of move what can a person do if they find that their office or whatever they're just in a situation where they have forced exposure kind of against their will how do you mitigate such a thing because it seems so like it's either like a light switch it's on or it's off what can you do yeah and unfortunately with magnetic fields in particular you can't really block them because they're like I said these really long wavelengths really it's 60 hertz versus like our cell phones which are the thousands and thousands like millimeter waves like 60,000 or something up to 30,000 maybe and the smaller ones you can block them you can do like a Faraday cage and that will just block most of the frequencies from coming through so with a magnetic field you're going to have to focus more on your individual health resilience in other ways and so that's where a lot of like this stuff you mentioned Dr. Cruz like the sun exposure the morning light exposure red light therapy keeping it dark at night and then there's circadian practices with your diet you know and then I like things like you know like molecular hydrogen and other kind of supplemental stuff that can really help clean up those radical oxygen species but you want to be careful because the idea is that antioxidants will clean up radical oxygen species but the thing with radical oxygen species is that it's information it's not just something that's bad it sends a signal that your body uses to understand how different cellular processes are working and when it gets high enough it kicks in certain cleanup processes and you know we don't need to get into all that so you don't want to just go max on vitamin C or something but something like molecular hydrogen is more of a selective antioxidant and it's going to clean up the most harmful ones while letting the more normal signaling ones do their thing like red light therapy is interesting because it really mimics what we get from the sun which we're not getting because we're inside with our lights on and whatever you know so those are the kind of things that I would be focusing on but you know this is not medical bias and if somebody does live under such a thing I would I would you know look look for someone like me or other biophysics based health coaches who can help you on an individual level because everybody's got their own individual needs right fair enough so there is a deeper history too that you write about going back to the cold war when the US and Soviet Union turned electromagnetic research into a battleground to use your words what is that story because the graphics you show they're pretty eye opening that two different empires went two different ways and it has huge effects huge effects and I think it's really interesting because I think it's some of this is just chance is that the Soviet scientists in the post-war era kind of stumble upon some immune related effects from the lower level electromagnetic energy and their research even states that it's not the level of power so much as the frequency itself and I mentioned with Paul Harrow you know earlier same idea it's not so much the absolute power it's like the disturbing of the status quo with these novel frequencies so the United States though we hadn't come across that research and to the extent that we believe what's called non-ionizing radiation because it's unlike an x-ray it's not actually damaging your tissues directly and so to the extent that we understood that it harmed at all is because these radar operators were actually burning themselves and getting cataracts and stuff because they're just directly exposed to it and so there is a scientist who figured out a threshold after which the risk of those sort of acute effects became too high and it wasn't worth dealing with especially like long-term day-to-day exposure different standards for like if it's a short exposure so we kind of locked in that as a standard for exposure to this stuff and of course the Russians were aware of that because you know it's public information and so they created this microwave emitter I don't remember exactly how many millihertz or whatever it is but it's somewhere in the range of our you know the higher 4G 5G fields that we use for our phones and they just pointed it at the embassy the U.S. embassy in Moscow and the U.S. didn't even know it was happening for I think decades perhaps yeah let me read this because I have this exact paragraph because this is so compelling to me you say the divergence between the U.S. and Soviet Union exploded in 1976 when U.S. intelligence discovered the Moscow signal Soviets beaming low-power microwaves at the U.S. embassy for 23 years intended as jamming or harassment it sparked microwave sickness reports fatigue vision issues elevated cancers among staff ambassador Walter Stossel developed leukemia and died in 1986 three ambassadors total succumbed to cancers linked to the exposure Secretary Henry Kissinger briefed in 1975 squashed hazard pay for all embassy workers to avoid embarrassment despite internal memos calling it a health hazard the incident fueled U.S. secrecy Project Pandora but reinforced the thermal only dogma dismissing Soviet non-thermal data as propaganda even as declassified studies later showed leukemia clusters 2 to 3x expected rates so yeah I thought that was super wild you keep you use the term heat or nothing that the U.S. kind of had this paradigm of it either creates heat or if it doesn't create heat then there can't be anything that it does and the Soviets knew that there's a lot you can do even when you're not producing heat and they seem to have blasted the U.S. embassy for half of my lifetime and it had big effects yeah and they specifically used a power level that was much much lower than the the heat threshold like thousands of times lower than the U.S. heat threshold just so the U.S. thought it was some sort of like you said jamming device for their radios or something and I mean all that's meanwhile the Soviets knew what they were doing yeah it is so wild and very concerning I don't know if you've read Arthur Furstenberg's The Electric Rainbow or The Invisible Rainbow but man that is a book that just hits you I actually only read the first half because it hits you with so many stories like data after data after data it's very dense I was just like yeah I get it man point proven point proven I'll put it down that is a beautiful book and I do highly recommend that to everybody but I would say like I've followed the work of Furstenberg for many years and he was electrosensitive so he's got that perspective of this as a threat like it was like literally a threat to his body you know most of us are more resilient than that and so I would read that book and be like okay this is important and this is something we're not taking seriously at a society level but as an individual most of us can take care of ourselves and not succumb to that sort of level of illness. Yeah it's it's really tough to know I mean my dad felt good until he didn't and then in a couple weeks later died of cancer and they did scans and like hey you got tumors everywhere man you're probably not coming out of this hospital and you know he was seven he was in his 70s but most people get into their 80s so you know how much exposure it seems like he had a whole lot sitting in front of a computer as an accountant his whole life but just because you feel okay doesn't mean it's not taking years off your life and that's the kind of thing that concerns me when you get into those upper ages you want to feel good to potentially spend time with grandkids that might exist or something you don't know at the end of your life's going to be like so the damage you do in early to mid life man it's it's not it's not a free lunch it's not a free ride you know it's true and I don't want people to get caught up in the fear cycle is basically where I'm coming from you know guilty yeah it's just I think fear is maybe one of the most harmful substances if we can call it that you know and yes you can be empowered to do things and get yourself out of the exposure if you can too absolutely yeah it's true I tend to get a little paranoid especially with young kids I'm just like you can't control the signals they're everywhere you know what my kids their first school shared a wall with a veterinarian's office which every day I'm looking at that like what kind of fucking signals are going off in this school all day and it's just you feel so powerless so I mean the phrase ignorance is bliss exists for a reason because the more you know the scarier things sometimes become but to get back to the 49er story what are some of the big criticisms that you are hearing to this theory overall do any of them have a point you think what's the pushback been I think they do and also they also misread me in a way so a lot of it is like you know it's Shanahan's training methods or it's the turf and it's the or it's we talked about the injuries like the people saying well you got the injury stats wrong I think I didn't I think we're talking compared to apples and oranges but that's a common one other people will mention like steroid use cipro which is an antibiotic that apparently gets used a lot in sports because I'm thinking because of the MRSA infections that go around but maybe for other reasons too it's anti-inflammatory so there's a couple other things and I think because I was writing this article kind of to scratch an itch and like I was starting my sub stack and I had no subscribers I thought I'm gonna make it flashy and like maybe I'll get like 30 subscribers and that'll be exciting like that was my high level and maybe I'll get like 10 to 30 thousand views on X and so I wanted to write something that was just kind of like a little bit provocative and really wanted to emphasize that substation because that was kind of a meme at that point it was starting to become a meme so I'm like I'm gonna focus on that because that's what people are thinking about so you know I think it's never one thing there's a lot of things and you read all of my series here's something to just kind of give you some context about how discourse works in social media so I got over 22 million views on that first tweet in my thread second tweet not even a million views so that's a huge drop-off then the first essay in my subtext series got 80,000 views I haven't checked recently but that's what it was the third one which was the last one that went into the mechanisms seven or 8,000 views so you have 22 million people thinking they know something about what I've said about the story when in fact only 8,000 people know everything I had to say about this story yeah it's a little wild and it seems like with that first one the algorithm hadn't caught up to suppressing you yet because obviously tech companies all of them have a huge interest in saying electronic technology is harmless don't worry about it ever the more the better yeah I wanted to quote this so you do mention in your article some of this pushback and you say perhaps one of the most common complaints about my 49ers EMF injury hypothesis is that the 49ers have practiced at the current facility since 1988 this is true but then you shared a tweet from Tristan Scott where he says in 2014 the year that the 49ers injuries began is the same year the substation went from a small local plant to a full regional transmission hub increasing 2,000% in capacity and now we're right back to it sounding like there's something to it yeah yeah I think Tristan so much for doing that post because I I had been working on a follow-up post to explain that part and I got swamped and he just came in and it was just like that really helped with that part of the story right away and I've documented completely on my sub stack how it went from this teeny little substation that was honestly across the parking lot and nowhere near the facility to this massive substation that was created not only to power the stadium but Santa Clara is in the heart of Silicon Valley they're building capacity for data centers so it's the biggest substation in their system yeah and so this is a very extreme example them playing near this thing a hundred yards away from this thing as often as they do but that's fine because we have all across this country power stations next to schools and hospitals or EMF soups and you know it's it's just good that maybe it takes an extreme example in an arena that people actually give a shit about you know the NFL where we actually start to ask some of these questions another thing I've seen recently this is just a a tangent really but I've been seeing people making compilations of athletes with wired earbuds that with all the millions of dollars they have and all the resources they have you think they'd have the latest air pods or the best beats by Dre wireless stuff and I haven't seen anybody say anything but the insinuation is that these athletes know something about Bluetooth and for that reason they deal with the hassle of your $10 gas station wired headphones because they don't want those wireless earbuds just an interesting thing it's interesting like how much is not said I think that's a really good point and I wanted to add to that thing you know people's criticisms about my argument is that actually in the third installment I have a whole section on how circadian rhythm disruption and light is a huge factor in the collagen degradation in fact I think it's the most important factor and that the EMF is kind of just like the straw that broke the camel's back for the 49ers but these tendon issues are happening across all sports it's not just the 49ers and so I think it's really like a larger issue of we are living in an unhealthy light environment and the athletes because they're at the extreme edge of human performance are showing these acute signs of it whereas the rest of us it's showing up in more longer-term chronic disease diabetes heart disease etc etc you don't make that connection yes yes and I wanted to make sure this fit into the first hour because it just blew my mind but yes coming through your Twitter feed I saw this comment where somebody says where I live all the firehouses got towers installed I imagine they got a hefty check for it I think it's terrible it would make a really good research opportunity I've asked a couple of firefighters about it and they look at me like I'm crazy lol and you replied with an article the firefighters wake up call to all of us by Susan Foster about the policy of letting these power companies kind of put up these towers wherever they want apparently they do use fire stations quite often I've got to read this it's a little long but wow she says the industry friendly California legislator may claim they know nothing about the health concerns but in fact they do the legislator granted an exemption from SB 649 to the firefighters who have fought cell towers on their stations in court and in their cities for almost 20 years throughout California firefighters have long complained of often debilitating symptoms from cell phone towers on their stations cities frequently rent out space on fire stations to add to city revenue firefighters live and sleep in the stations when on duty and have experienced significant RF radiation exposure a 2004 SPECT brain scan study on firefighters in central California found brain anomalies and all the men tested as well as delayed reaction time lack of impulse control and cognitive impairment none of the men worked hazmat so chemical exposure was ruled out all the firefighters tested had suffered from sleep disturbances headaches lack of focus and memory loss following installation of a tower adjacent to their station five years earlier they sued the wireless company that told them the towers were perfectly harmless but section 704 of the telecommunications act of 1996 does not allow health to be taken into consideration when sitting a tower so the judge dismissed the lawsuit damn I mean if the 49ers is an extreme example this is a little less extreme because they have a tower in their station and the effects seem pretty damn serious and they all are affected and in this case I've got a colleague up here Shane Riley he's on I think his Twitter is optimal dwelling or something but he he's an ex-firefighter who became an EMF mitigator because he was sickened by the conditions at the fire station oh they're terrible electromagnetic radiation sickness I think is what we would call that and you've got studies in like other countries where they'll take a tower off of an apartment building and just all people's insomnia and irritability and brain fog just goes away you know mm-hmm yeah and another thing I wanted to fit in this first hour is that I read the breakdown of your own health journey where you say that you were pretty much the poster child for tech abuse and I am right there with you on that as an only child the TV was my best friend yeah and you also though go on to say that in your case damage from conventional medicine plays a role too and I do enjoy stories of people who fall into the wounded healer archetype you know you fixed yourself and then become a fixer you go forth and share what you've learned talk a little bit about your own kind of health journey and how you finally figured it out with a lot of the stuff that you are preaching these days yeah how about this I'll do like a little high level over that and then we can maybe get into that a little more in the second hour because deals with some more stuff that I maybe want to be careful about sharing sure always got to tease that second hour so good on you yeah yeah so the high level is that like you know I grew up in Silicon Valley in a little town outside of San Jose called Santa Cruz and my dad had computers when I was five you know I got like the first IBM or whatever and so I got into computers early and by the time I was a teenager well you had you mentioned that the getting harmed by medical help so when I was 16 I was given Tetra Cycline for some normal teenage acne and they're like you know stay out of the sun for three months and I'm like I'm a skateboarder and like I'm like are you kidding I'm like stay out of the sun and so Tetra Cycline is basically a mitochondrial toxin I discovered later and my life at that point just kind of started slowly just kind of spiraling downward in some ways I started getting depressed and as a coping mechanism I became less social and more interested in my computer and I got into hacking and so I started staying up later and later to just work on my computer and I made friends with these hackers and we discovered that you could go to the local university and get on that's something called the Sun Spark Station Sun was a really hip tech company back in the 80s and 90s and they had these massive really powerful computers that are like not even a fraction as powerful as our phones now but at the time that was it was so we would sneak into the university after 2am because there'd be no guards there and we go use those computers and so I was I inverted my sleep schedule and so circadian disruption and it went on for a couple years until I hurt my back really bad and I couldn't work anymore and then it was like I got mono and it was just this one thing after another until all of a sudden like I can't like sleep on my bag I'm like sleeping upright and just horrible gastrointestinal stuff and then I injured my wrists and I couldn't type I couldn't even hear carry a glass of water with my hand I was like I'd have to hold a glass of water like this oh god it was very scary and so I kind of just clung on to whatever I could at that point and you know I so I've stayed in tech not knowing that was the thing that was still harming me you know I'm still staying up late at night and so I had another two or three waves of that kind of like finding stability and then everything falling apart again and at a certain point I had kids and you can't have your health falling apart like that when you have kids and so I really got serious that was when I was like 33 about like okay my diet and like exercising more and trying to go to bed early and just over the years got slightly healthier started working out and then after I got divorced just the stress of that year I got kicked down probably lower than I've ever been and that point being a single parent and being that sick I was just thinking to myself I can never let this happen again I'm gonna figure it out and so slowly got out of that hole and at one point after working at this wireless company wireless networking company where I was basically I had like three routers on my desk at all times and my colleagues had routers and we had these is called access points these little discs all over the office and video cameras that were Wi-Fi probably hundreds of units and massive server infrastructure and then on the wall like maybe 10 feet like that direction was this microwave emitting device that was built to beam microwaves like I think up to three miles so you could do networking infrastructure in places that don't have hardwired fiber and stuff and so that was pointing right at me and we'll get more into that in the second part but I got very sick and had to quit my job and wound up just like it was summertime I wound up going to the beach and just sitting in the sand and in the sun and then I came home and it wasn't working so I just would get up every morning and sit in the grass and too tired to do anything else and slowly just started getting better and then I realized wait a minute what's really changed I didn't change my diet didn't change not working out not doing anything other than not being in front of a computer and not being irradiated by wireless all day and outside in nature and I'm getting better and so that was kind of the turnaround for me yeah I love it I mean you say in that piece that you tried everything you know herbs supplements stress reduction techniques diets and you're kind of at the end of your rope like so many people are when they finally try the alternatives not that you even did it intentionally it seems but you know you might have felt better and then investigated why did I feel better find out that there is science and stuff behind it but the simple stuff getting the right amount of sunlight and grounding working on your gel state structured water in the cell yeah and it actually worked after many years of nothing else working I just do find that fascinating the stories I hear they keep stacking up yeah and I love that you mentioned the gel state of the water because I'm gonna tease again I think there's there's some interesting things that have come from that that go beyond just health that I find very exciting all right I love it I love it one of the other things I was gonna bring up is just to run through this because it's on your website and I just think more examples help to stack up to validate a premise that people might think is too alternative or too weird and just the importance of sunlight because it is so demonized in our society you have on your company website a place where you say across civilization sunlight played a practical role in maintaining health Egyptian healers incorporated light into their temple treatments Greek physicians encouraged sun exposure to support vitality the Inca organized daily life around the sun's movements Ayurveda recognized sutra as understanding and then you go into heliotherapy in early western medicine or conventional medicine before pharmaceuticals dominated western treatment sunlight was used clinically in the early 1900s Dr. August Reuler developed structured sun exposure protocols in Swiss alpine clinics helping tuberculosis patients who had exhausted other options his results spoke for themselves Florence Nightingale insisted that patient wards receive direct sunlight viewing it as essential at the Battle Creek Sanitarium Dr. John Harvey Kellogg applied forms of phototherapy to support people with rickets in 1903 Dr. Niles Vinson received the Nobel Prize for treating lupus with targeted light therapy so yes we find this long lineage of people recognizing this reality but it's just never folded into the mainstream paradigm I guess one other thing I wanted to ask you before we ran out of time was you mentioned a second phase to the 49ers work that you might be embarking on that maybe isn't ready to go fully public but maybe inner circle public yeah well so I measured the magnetic fields but the really interesting thing was with our modern electrical infrastructure is the way that the transformers are structured and everything you get something called dirty electricity which is basically you know about dirty electricity if your listeners don't so you got a AC electricity is a sine wave but dirty electricity is noise in the sine wave so it's like squiggly lines on the wave itself and dirty electricity is very harmful you can read a book called dirty electricity by Dr. Sam Milham and it's just this a phenomenal work they've done studies on like cows who the transmission lines get grounded near them and all of a sudden they're producing like a third of the milk maybe even less and then they move the cows and they're back to normal production and so we're basically polluting the earth with stray current that is not a pure sine wave it's a dirty sine wave and I do think that that could be an important factor with what's going on with the 49ers and maybe even more important than the magnetic field itself because to the extent that they regulate that stuff they regulate the magnetic fields and I did get some elevator readings you know and up to like over 20 and in certain places and actually up to 50 in very specific hot spots and so it's possible that it is that high in the facilities but even if it's not that stray current could be causing its own harm and that could be bleeding onto the field and so on and so forth so that's another question I have and I'm gonna be down there and hopefully gonna do some measurements and then just the larger question in general with sports is so 5g was kind of in a way a bust because it's such a like small wavelength that it can't get through buildings and even trees will block it and so they have been expanding it with these micro cells that they put in neighbors and they kind of hide behind things that look like trees and stuff but where they're really doing it is in downtown areas and in sports stadiums and JMA wireless because Levi's stadium is where they're doing a Super Bowl just did a 200 million dollar renovation of Levi's stadium to put in millimeter wave and C band hotspots all over the stadium that's on my to-do list because to me like okay that's happening at Levi's stadium not only for football for any event there like when Taylor Swift plays there I don't know if she plays there but you know what I mean like NFL wants people having great connectivity so they can take videos and watch stuff on their screen and be interactive and they've changed the lighting this massive bright LED light they used to have like more of the halogen full spectrum lights and now it's the like 5600 Kelvin which is like bright white daylight because that's what makes their cameras look you know so it's all this kind of entertainment thing so I'm gonna be writing more about that because I really think this is bigger than an NFL it is bigger than NFL and because it's caught on in the NFL that's great I'm gonna keep that connection but the story is gonna keep on going after the Super Bowl because it's much bigger than the NFL and it's bigger than the magnetic field it's the light it's the millimeter wave it's the straight current and who knows where it will go beyond that yeah well I definitely look forward to seeing you continue the investigation and before we go we got to save some room to talk about what you got going on at sunlight is life you make a few software tools for helping people get their light life right talk to us about some of those yeah so when I started when I really dialed in the Sun stuff I found it frustrating because like I didn't know when all the different events throughout the day were that were important and so I just wanted a quick place where I could just look and it was all listed and I could just set my phone down because I didn't want to be on my phone all the time thinking about this stuff so it basically it tells you like when the sunrise is when the UV rises when UVB first appears which is how we get vitamin D and is better for building a tan it tells you when it disappears if you're more fair skinned and you want to like avoid getting a sunburn and stuff and tells you when the sunset and so on and more importantly though there's a whole page of this education about all these things and why they're important and the timing and if you don't want to think about all these things in a granular way it'll just give you a really simple schedule that you can follow so my whole thing is most people are not really interested in getting into the deep down into the health mechanisms they're just like what can I do to make my life simple so for them it's just there I have to call the bare minimum protocol that just tells you the three basic things just do your best and try to do these things when you can as a start because my feeling is when you get started you realize how easy it is and you want to do it more and it just kind of builds on that but like just don't stress three simple things boom boom boom and then beyond that there's like a vitamin d calculator and like a compass so you can see where the sun is if you're like not home and you want to get up and watch the sunrise and just a couple other things like that just kind of useful tools yeah I think that's great because I'm sure a lot of people are like me that I get caught up in analysis paralysis or I'm thinking oh I need to start working out more so let me do a deep dive into the absolute best workout bang for the buck I can do and you're spending a couple of hours when you just get down and do the 30 fucking push-ups just start doing something lift a heavy thing walk around yeah uh yeah same with sunlight it's just like well I'm gonna do this but I want to do it perfectly from the first day I do it so let me get all my ducks in a row and it's like no just walk out into the sun just go outside and and if the right back in the saddle with another interview and I don't usually jump on trends very much but this time I kind of went for it because this story popped up and I could tell it was going quite viral and Peter did make time for me amongst all the sports and health podcasts trying to get his attention and I had planned for this one to actually come out alongside the Super Bowl not that I really needed that kind of competition for people listening to my show but it just got away from me it just felt topical and now the football thing is so last week but the Charles Fort presentation took several days longer than I expected since I didn't outsource the editing or anything which has got to change in the future but either way I thought this was right up our alley for a couple of reasons the main one being that sometimes for a public health scandal or concern to actually get acknowledged it has to be wrapped up in something else that people care about ding ding ding sports you know you think they'd be looking at high voltage lines over their kids schools or the big substation across from the local hospital but no if you're hurting their favorite sports team though well they're pissed sports fans understand though you know all joking aside that very small advantages or disadvantages can have huge effects so I thought it was awesome just to see this rise to the level of cultural awareness that it did to the level of like national conversation at least in the sports world and we talked to people all the time who tend to have a more esoteric or spiritual view of truth almost as if the truth is alive and wants to be known and so not only did this story sprout out of the ground in an interesting way but of all the stadiums that the Super Bowl could have been at it was at this one and I didn't watch the Super Bowl to see if there was any commentary on it given such a large audience that would have been a little interesting seems like most of the discourse was focused on the halftime show stuff and the cultural clash there and there was that one commercial where they promoted the new AI search function for the ring cameras and everybody was like hey wait a minute here did we just pay for and install AI controlled network surveillance grids across our entire neighborhoods yeah it seems like you did and that might qualify as another instance of the truth wanting to be known and that one's particularly funny because this big billion dollar company spends all this money on a Super Bowl ad and for it to go poorly it's like all you had to do was neutral but instead your marketing team thought oh we'll reveal this new networked surveillance feature by wrapping it up in the idea of a lost dog because Americans just love their dogs and it didn't go over so great but this is what an apocalyptic age is all about strap in the big reveal across the board also this is on my list let me play this it's an example of how the national conversation was and is happening about emf maybe less in the offseason again but this has 2.2 million views it's two minutes it's an interview with george kittle who clearly seems to have been a player on the 49ers team but here we go there is tinfoil hat conspiracy theories be careful i have a lot listen that the electromagnetic fields okay next to the san francisco 49ers training facility is the reason why there have been so many injuries on the team because it's causing softening muscle tissue some collagen thing that that is the theory right yeah what is your take on this conspiracy theory um let's see i think one of my teammates put a really good kyle you check our fullback and he said as a professional athlete you're always trying to get one percent better like is this ice tub is this rehab recovery thing is this red light therapy does it make me one percent better because then you can stack all those up and you're hey you're three percent better than the next guy because you're doing all this stuff if something's affecting like negatively 0.25 percent you'd want to know about it like whether it's a this type of cleat is hurting me this type of shoulder pads is like increasing my risk to get hurt you'd probably change that so i think all we're saying is as players is like we just like to look into it to make sure it's not something right that's what i would just appreciate like hey this isn't going to affect you guys and then if they come out and they do some research like no you guys are good then i don't think we'll think about it now one thing that messes me up with it this is tough my rookie season there used to be trees in between the electrical substation and our practice facility and there's a fence there too and above the fence all the trees had no leaves on them year round that's kind of weird all dead there's a couple bunches of leaves every once in a while and it was like that no one notices it until you point it out to people like i didn't point it out to coach shanahan until like 2021 yeah like a vet pointed out to me my rookie season i was like that's kind of weird yeah it is what it is um but then this year the nfl came in and cut them all down so they're not there anymore so no one can see them so it's only us vets that know that that that was the truth that's i don't think anyone's talking about that yet but that one messed me up i was like oh my goodness there's no leaves on these trees why we're feeding the tiktok conspiracy theorists no i would say it's my argument for it is this like fred warner he practices there and trains there year round and he's had one injury his entire career so it's like right now did he just evolve and he absorbed the radiation i don't know but i'm kidding i'm kidding but it's like it's just like let's just figure out if it's actually harming the players or not and i mean hopefully it's not right it's easy 100 yeah i like it i'll take the win i'll take at least cracking the door open on the curiosity around emf since it is so ubiquitous and that goddamn telecommunications act in 1996 you really fucked us there bill what are you gonna do so yeah this particular episode was more about covering an instance of one of our core topics of concern penetrating mainstream culture and just how it was handled how the term conspiracy theory was used to turn people off from looking deeper all that sort of stuff now the plus show was kind of weird when we were set to record peter messaged me and said that he checked out a few episodes of thc and it made him feel comfortable to talk about personal stuff that he might have left out otherwise and that's kind of like the more mystical synchronistic spiritual force stuff that he feels seemed to lead him along this work and he had this long story and then bang he followed along and had this outsized impact of going viral and suddenly being talked about and invited to all sorts of places due to following the spiritual tug so that's always interesting not only did he feel like we might be a better show to actually talk about that sort of stuff than say the scott mcafee show or some other espn podcast but the fact that the plus show is more private also seemed to make him feel more comfortable going there we talked about the gerald pollock fourth phase of water stuff and how he nerded out on that for a while and improved his health just all good stuff so this is what the plus show contains in this one more of a detailed example of how synchronicity and spiritual guidance kind of works and when you follow that lead big things seem to happen i know synchronicities can sometimes be very personal and the impact is kind of hard to relate to others much like dreams but if you struggle with picking up on those subtle messages in your own life i would hope that hearing other people talk about their tales would be helpful so peter seems like a good guy happy to have gotten to know him and it also makes me curious that there are now three people with the last name cowan all focused on emf light health and gel state water dr tom cowan previous guest alexis cowan and now peter cowan so strange all three no relation as far as i know but i wonder if you looked up the origins of the surname if you'd get anything resonant with this work just an odd thing i noticed so in higher side news we had a big gap there for a minute 12 days without anything because i was really working hard on this book of the damned presentation then i had to stop to prepare for an interview that was on the books it's just a lot easier to read a book with the knowledge that you're just going to be looking for things to ask someone else about the author about but it's another deal entirely to have to talk about it all yourself and my goal is just to make sure i fit in all the accounts from the book because that's what i think people want to know about and when you hear the book discussed and charles fort's work discussed you really only get those two or three most popular stories that people tend to bring up over and over again so instead of a nine hour audiobook or something you can just listen to me for 90 ish minutes and feel like you know everything of interest that the book contains and because it's so old i didn't feel like i was doing any damage to sales or anything like that which is something i do have to be careful with there is a fine line between commentary and promotion of a thing versus plagiarism and piracy or something piracy adjacent but we did it i probably relayed 50 different stories often very short but it's more about the volume of odd stuff that goes unreported because it's inconvenient to the mainstream model i also wanted to make sure though that we folded in forts conspiratorial leanings that don't often get talked about either saying not only that we are property but that our owners communicate instructions down to secret societies that manage the planet for them wild anyway we don't have to go over klyzak talking about the new level of tech and ai in the classroom clearly something of great personal interest to me but not plus members favorite it's only sitting at a 4.3 yikes to me that's on the edge of like c plus b minus range and i get it maybe not a lot of new information but i still wanted to give him an attaboy for being so far ahead of the curve on this subject ai hit us like a ton of fucking bricks it's basically the whole internet now so a person like john should get his credit even if it's not exactly the most exciting material at this point i'm just kind of rooting for john he
