Tonight's episode, The Coworker's Gift. All right. This one is pretty wild. It's going to raise some people's skeptic radar, but I love stories like this. We'll talk about it on the back end, but there's a lot to unpack, as they say, which I hate that phrase and I just used it. But there you go. Well, I do love raising, awareness, skepticism, consciousness raising, love all the raising. Yes, so we can do some raising. Well, no, it's the thinking about this stuff, the wondering, that's where the magic is. Just the wondering about the wonderful and the wondrous. Well, whatever your stance is, this one comes to us from Gus, and it's really a family story, mostly about his daughter, Tara, who had a very strange experience at work. Strange indeed, and I have a lot to say about this one because I find it super intriguing. But first, let's read the story. I believe it's your turn, sir. All right. Very well then. Scott and Forrest. This story took place in mid-August 2015 in Flemington, New Jersey. Our older daughter, Tara, was working her last shift at a local outlet store before packing up and heading off to college later that week. Her shift ended at 10 p.m. She normally came home a few minutes after 10, as the outlet store was less than two miles from her house. My wife and I were upstairs in our bedroom, waiting for our daughter to come through the front door. We waited, but there was no sign of her. By 10.30, she still hadn't arrived, even though we were less than five minutes away. We started to get worried. Finally, shortly before 11, we heard the front door open. Tara came upstairs and said, You're never going to believe what just happened to me. Just let me tell my story without interruptions. She then told us a most remarkable tale. Her shift ended at 10 p.m. as scheduled. As she and one of her co-workers walked out of their cars, he turned to her and said, Before we both go back to college, there's something I have to tell you. And you can tell me to stop if you're uncomfortable, but I really need to talk to you. My daughter hesitantly said, Okay. He said, Tara said, That must be my Nana and Pop-Pop. That would be Gus's wife's parents. And my grandma, Gus's own mom. He nodded in agreement, then said, For two of the spirits, I feel a tightening in my chest, which to me feels like a heart attack. My daughter said, Yes, both my Nana and Pop-Pop died of congestive heart failure. He then said, as his hands ran up and down across his stomach, For the other female spirit, I feel like my stomach is in pain all over. And then the pain goes away. But then it comes back again. It goes away. It comes back again several times. This pain to me is symbolic of cancer. My daughter said, My grandma had abdominal cancer for 13 years. She was operated on three times to remove the cancer, but every time it came back until she was no longer able to fight the good fight. He nodded and then asked, How do you fit with the letter J? Tara answered, My Pop-Pop's name was James or Jim. How do you fit with the letter P? He asked. And she replied, Well, that's my Nana. Her name was Margaret, but she went by Peggy or Peg. And he followed up with, And how do you fit with the letter I? And Tara said, That's my grandma. Her name was Irma. He then asked, How do you connect with the month of November? She replied, Well, my Pop-Pop died in November and my Nana died October 30th, just before November. And what about the month of August? Tara said. My grandma died in early August. Then he held two fingers very close together and asked, Does anyone in your family have birthdays very close to one another? Tara laughed and said, Yes, my birthday is a day after my mom's birthday. And my sister's birthday is a day after my father's birthday. Tara's co-worker had correctly identified everything. The number of spirits, their genders, how they passed, their initials, the months they died, and the close birthdays. But now came the really freaky part. He finally asked Tara, Is anyone in your family going for surgery very soon? He circled his face with his hand and said, It's something to do with the face. Then pointed to his right eye and finished, With the right eye in particular. My daughter's jaw dropped, and she said in disbelief, Yeah, my dad is going in for a partial corneal transplant on his right eye tomorrow morning. And that would be Gus who sent the story in. He looked straight at Tara and stated with absolute conviction, Tell your dad, His mom will be with him. That's why he felt so compelled to talk to my daughter. My mom wanted me to know she knew all about my eye surgery and would be there right alongside me. My surgery was successful. Gus M. from Flemington, New Jersey. Okay, so when we were outlining this, we're looking at this story, you know, one of the first things I thought about was cold reading, which is what skeptical people will always come right out of the gate with this. Well, it's a J. There's somebody, you know, there's a lot of fishing going on, which is a feature of cold reading, you know, general statements and that sort of thing. But the way this story is told, I mean, the way that Tara has told it to Gus, now, you know, we're hearing it, obviously, from the third person now, because it's Tara who's telling her dad, who's been telling us, and this may have been years ago, and we don't have all the details. We don't know how long these two work together. Were they emotionally intimate at work? And I don't mean having a relationship, but, like, did they work together all day long every day? Like, I know the names of a lot of your family members, because we work together. So, you know, it's like, oh, is this person just overhearing things in the lunchroom? And then... Yeah, but here's the point. Just quickly, as far as long as you've known me, and we're pretty tight, I gotta say. You know of some of my relatives, but this is leading to my larger point here, but, like, I doubt you know what my grandmother was called, like her nickname. I doubt that you know the specifics of how they passed away, what their ailments were, what's going on with my dad. Yeah, that's true, that's true, yeah. So, the higher point with me is, for what purpose are you doing a cold reading? Now, you may continue, and I will revisit my point. But that's, no, that's a good question, you know, and I was looking at, you know, the details of a cold reading, and we talked about this, and now I can't even remember. Oh, John Edward. Oh, yes. Folks are not gonna remember this guy, unless you're of a certain age. I mean, was it that long ago? Was it 20 years ago? I don't know. He had a TV show, and people would come, and he would do readings for people in the audience. I actually went, we talked about this on... That's right. ...Starsion Legends a long time ago. I went to a taping of this show with a very close friend of mine, whose husband worked at Cantor Fitzgerald, and died on 9-11 when the tower collapsed. Cantor Fitzgerald was one of the places who experienced some very heavy losses. And so we went there, and she was hoping to hear from him, and we stood in line. We went and we sat in there, and we were open-minded about it, and nothing happened. Nothing, like, he didn't even address her, but his show was very miraculous-seeming, and folks were always like, well, it's cold reading, and there's people that are really good, and I can't remember if the amazing Randy did this, or these other magicians will do demonstrations of cold reading, and some folks are just really amazing, and there are people that will blatantly tell you, I'm not psychic, I'm not a medium, but I'm going to make you feel like I know things. And they are good at that kind of stuff. The only thing I can say is when we were standing in line to go into that taping of that TV show, if Mr. Edwards, and I'm not saying that he was, but if he was a cold reader, no one came out and asked us any questions. There wasn't any of that stuff like they do. They dramatized this in Leap of Faith about The Evangelist, the Steve Martin movie, which is an excellent movie, by the way. But they dramatized how his people would go outside the tent and kind of ask questions about what's bothering you or how are you feeling. And then when they would come in, they would use headphones and microphones to say, okay, the woman in the back there, she's got her left arm is atrophied or whatever. And so he would go, your arm, you know, and that sort of stuff. And I thought, well, maybe that's happening with the John Edwards show, but it wasn't. Not that I'm trying to put John Edwards on a pillar. No, no, sure. But I have seen people do the first name, the first letter and all that. But when you hear how Tara told her dad this story, it sounds very precise. It didn't feel like there was a lot, didn't sound like there was a lot of hunting around. I have been in a position with a medium who I believed was accurately telling me things. And she did a little bit of this stuff where it was just like, is there a so-and-so or whatever? Right. I'm very sensitive to it. I try to not give anything up. Yeah. So I don't know, you know, I had like, but again, I guess it's deconstructing and thinking about how I was like, well, maybe this guy has been working with her for a year or two. Maybe she's sitting at the table next to him at lunch. And she's like, yeah, my dad's having corneal surgery tomorrow. He overhears that. Here's the other thing I'll tell you. I mean, this is creepy, but like it's part of the way that we do our research on folks and from the past and not stalking folks. But you can, if you got somebody's name, you can go on Ancestry and get all kinds of information. Yeah, no, no. Look, because you have the internet. A ton of effort and a ton of memorization to do this. Yeah. And there was a clip, and I can't remember for what show, but I think it was, this was in Europe somewhere. They would stop people on the street and they would say, you know, could you come into our tent for an interview? This is for a show. Yeah. And just tell us a few things, like five, we're going to ask you five questions. And then they basically were on mic, these hackers in the back types. They weren't, I don't know if they were random as hackers, but they could look up instantly on the internet and find out all kinds of stuff about your relationships. Right. This is already happening, by the way, with AI glasses too that have facial recognition. I've seen the clips. I mean, of course, the clips are everything is AI and BS now, but I've seen where they were talking about you could have the AI glasses, like the meta glasses or the Ray-Bans or whatever, pick your brand. I'm not picking out on any particular. But you go, you walk up to the person or as you're passing them on the street that showed like footage of people in New York on the street or wherever, Boston. And the person's walking by, the facial recognition comes up, it goes to the Facebook profile page or their Instagram or wherever else. And it's like, by the time you get up to them, you know all this stuff about them. And then you can just be like, oh my God, I saw you last night at the club. You know? And then they, because they posted pictures of it and the person doesn't even know that's happening. Of course, this is way before that, this story. But that, this is, this kind of stuff is going to get bad though. It's going to get bad. Yeah. And that's the point with that is that there's a purpose. So I try to be skeptical with these things, especially, you know, again, no one's losing any money. They're not, it was a Thomas Jefferson. No one's breaking your arm or picking your pocket with this. But that's looking for the motivation. So I have to ask, what is the motivation behind this then of coming forward with these kinds of things? Now you're talking about cold reading. I've talked about this on the show many times, way back years ago, because there was an old movie. We saw it in film school and I can't remember the name off the top of my head. It was like Big Top Alley or Midway Alley or something. It was all about the carnival and just the life there. It's a movie from the late forties, early fifties. And it was so far away ago, but when we started talking about psychics, it came up and the idea was, I always remember this scene because there was an old guy who wanted to retire from the carnival and he was teaching the young guy who was kind of the star of the show how to do the mind reading act. And the guy goes, I want you to take over this bag. It's a good moneymaker. He's like, well, I can't read minds. He's like, no, no, no, hold on. He's like, you don't need to read minds. I said, what do you mean? He said, all right, let me, he started to get this trance look and he said, I picture you as a boy running through a field and you have your dog with you and he's running beside you. Oh my God, how'd you know I had a dog? He's like, because every young boy has a dog. That's the point is that you pick that or you can do the Sherlock method where you're just very observational. Well, you don't have your wedding ring because I can see where the tan isn't. You know, there's a band of no tan on your finger. These things you can pick up and glean a lot from people and they freak out. That's my point here though, is that they often freak out. So in this case, what is the purpose of this coworker telling these things when I'm sure if he's done this before to other people, they don't often take it well. You know what I'm saying? That freaks people out. So is that, he just wanted to freak them out because the other motivations is that you have a TV show or you're a psychic. It's like, oh, are you selling a book? Are you selling tickets? Are you saying, well, yeah, you can count that as a motivation for these other folks and why they might do a cold reading because you're doing a show. You're getting a, you're an unscrupulous psychic who is trying to make money and wowing people. But here's where it's wowed me. And I'm still waiting for this to happen. I've talked to many psychics, some sessions I paid for. And I've been told some very interesting things about that they couldn't possibly have known. And this would be even before the internet when I was much, much younger. So that was pretty amazing that you knew that. Now here's my stance on that as far as personally for me is that the things that I've been told were nothing for the future or they're all things I already knew about myself. It was more of a self-help bed. I was just amazed that they knew that because I know these, again, back then before people could Google you, there was no Google for, and I had no profile or presence on the internet. So there are things that they couldn't possibly have known, but they knew. And so that was more self-help. Gus did say that, to the point about the state of technology, Gus did say this was 2015. So, you know, way pre-AI and Ancestry. I was on Ancestry.com in 2015 and it was functioning pretty well. But again, the amount of effort this would take, it would be a lot. But why? I mean, you know, like I said, Well, I can take a couple of reasons why. Maybe this guy was sweet on Tara. Could be, but like I said, that usually doesn't work well. Yeah, maybe he was going to want to be a performer doing this stuff and he was practicing, you know? Oh, it was a bit, okay, a bit of a stretch, I'll say. But here's what I'll say. Yeah, those are both super speculative. But here's the thing. Okay, so what's different because where I've been the most impressed and most wowed is I have a, more than a handful of friends who have had this kind of experience, but with somebody they didn't know at all. Totally perfect strangers who have come up to them. And I've talked about those incidents on the show and now the one friend of a friend that that happened to, it happened to be about his son who had passed suddenly and sadly. And it was a message that he had. This was somebody who was at a restaurant who didn't even talk to the friend of a friend. He talked to the friend of a friend's friend who was there meeting with him for lunch and the friend had not shown up yet. Right. And she just said, excuse me, I know you're going to think I'm a wacko. Right, which is how this guy led his conversation with Terrapin. Well, that's what I'm saying is that, but all the people that have told people with this psychic impression, you could say, have said, I feel compelled, I need to tell you this. I know you're going to take, you may take this wrong, you can tell me to stop, but the spirit or whatever you want to say is urging me to do this so I have to relay this message because that's the other thing I've heard from people who have this channel open is that they get bugged. It's like, hey, hey, you can hear me? You can hear me? Tell that other person. Yeah. In this case, it was a total stranger who he said, when your friend shows up for lunch, you got to tell him this because there's a young man who needs to tell him this. And the message was, it's not your fault. There wasn't any gain for this woman to say. It wasn't to the guy. She didn't ask for money. There was no possible way, you know, the friend knew this about the son. And how did this strange woman know this? And she left before the other guy showed up. She goes, I got to go, but please relay this message because he's here waiting for this person. No, what's funny to me about that is like, she's just like, I got to, here's this message. I got to go. I got to get back to work or whatever it is that she was doing. It's like, you know, she comes by and she drops like this supernatural, fascinating information. And then she's gone back to whatever it is that she does, unless you think she's a spirit passing through our world or not necessarily human or something like that. That's a novel angle. But I think generally all the psychics I've known, they're pretty normal people. Okay. This is not, they're not Zoltan stuck in the booth just handing out cards. And they're not people on the make who've just put up a shingle and there's a lot of neon and they're just really normal people. And that's the other thing that I find refreshing about it is that they have lives too. They just have this ability where stuff comes through and part of the gift is to share the gift with people for whom it's intended. So in any case, like, okay, well, you don't have to buy into it, but like, you know, why not? It's like the people that, again, they didn't pick your pocket. You're not lost any money. What's the point of this and that it's just a nice little message I have to tell you that in the message here is your loved ones are not really dead. They're always around and they're comforting you and they're watching over you. And I know some folks may not take any comfort with that depending on what you're up to. But the fact that love doesn't die, it's still there that one day you will see them again. I choose to take that comforting message. I think that's a good way to look at it too. And, you know, I've said a lot here about this particular one and cold reading, but like, I just wanted to address that because I know there'll be people that listen and will think about that. But in this particular case with the details we have, it's a pretty compelling story. You know, it's like they said, they got the first name, the first letter, the first initial, the time of death, what was wrong with all these folks when they passed away. It's a lot of very specific information. And again, with the coworker was getting ready, they were getting ready to not be in each other's lives. So... Well, that's right. That's right. They're going off to college. Yeah. Not to, again, like I say, I don't see any nefarious purposes here for that. Yeah. Other than like, I have to let you know that they're there. I've always seen it. And you might find some comfort in that. You know, you're always being protected. So if there's any skeptical angle, it's like you could say like, well, that's just a lot of lucky guessing. It's like, those are pretty specific to me details. Yeah. Because, okay, getting back to your, on a humorous note, you remember SNL did that John Edwards sketch. Yes. I don't remember who was acting it. Oh yeah, a while back. And that was... Will Ferrell, I think. Was it Will Ferrell? It was somebody. But basically the joke was like, I'm seeing a J. Like, no. R, no. Yeah, yeah, yeah. S, no. W, no. And it's like, you just go through the alphabet and like, I, yes, I, there you go. Right, right. Until you find something. Well, this didn't seem to be the case. If the story is told accurately, and I believe it is, they were pretty spot on right away. And there's other stories, again, that I love sharing, but the folks may not, who are part of this may, I know they probably don't care, but just strangers. And again, here's what's impressive is that often it's not been, not like this case, where it's like, I have to tell you something that you're being, you know, taken care of, or you have some comforting spirits around you. It's for another person. Right. That they weren't even involved with. It's like, you have a friend who's like, yeah, like, okay, I have a message for that friend. You have to relay this to them because I'm being bugged. That was what happened in this one. Because it was really about her dad. It was about Gus. It's like, don't worry, I'm going to be with you for your surgery. Yeah, that was one of the messages, but also just to relate like, okay, who are these people that I'm getting these feelings? And it's like, yeah, that's pretty close. Now, on the other hand, I've had people who, who had, I believe, some psychic ability where you're sitting there, they're kind of in a formal session. They're telling you things and they're like, hey, do you have any of this connection or who's this person? And I'll mention a name. It's like, I don't know anybody with that name. Right. And I don't know anybody with the, I don't, it could be, I don't know what you're talking about. Not that I don't believe that. I think something's coming through. It just wasn't really connected to me or apparent or relevant to my situation. And so like, well, and I'm honest and like, okay, yeah, you know, so you get all kinds of information. You know, look at the hungry ghost, you're getting all this kind of stuff. Information, I think on the other side is also pretty nebulous. Well, and that's the thing. I want like, how is this getting imparted and why are people, because there's a lot of people and everyone's just going to say because it's cold reading, but like, why is it that all you're getting is the first letter or the impression of a letter? Like, how does this work? How does the back and forth work? We did a series on a book called The Hungry Ghost. It's a really compelling series. It's one of my favorites that we've done. Look for that if you're interested in it. It will put you off the feet a little bit with what you're interacting with when you're dealing with the other side. Well, the point is you are interacting with something that is non-corporeal. But here, I think different, as far as I know, again, having talked to a lot of mediums at this point, none that I really gauged as being real charlatans. You know, I think everybody has certain amounts of talents. Some things come through clearer than others. I've had a case where I was told something psychically would happen like on a vacation. And it's like, you know, somebody said, this is a friend of a friend referring, it's like, this is going to happen to you. You're going to do this. It's like, that doesn't sound like me. Yeah. But okay, I'll keep my eyes open, my ears open. And what happened is that that very act, that action did happen, but it wasn't to me. I didn't do that. It was somebody else in our party and it happened exactly as they had stated. They just got the wrong person. Yeah, they just got the wrong person, but I was there. Well, I was actually, when it happened, I was in the bathroom at a restaurant and I came out and everybody looked kind of shell-shocked a little. They're like, am I missing something here? Can we just go back to eating tacos? And I learned later, it's like, oh yes, this person did do that and this happened, but it wasn't me. And I knew that because it's like, well, that's not something I would do. I just, I know myself. I wouldn't do that. Right, right, right. And so, like I said, it can be a different time, different place, but like, that's pretty impressive that they got anything at all. Like I said, it's just the same thing with remote viewing. It's like, you're not given anything. There's a photo in an envelope. They have no idea what it is. Yeah. And to get that many hits that are relevant specific, there's something to it. You know, like with the other readings where it's not been directly to the person, it's just like, what's the point of that if it's just a stranger and then they take off? Is it just to make the, like to freak the person out for a second? Like, I'm sure some people have done that. I don't think that's the case here. Well, as we often say, no matter what kind of experience you had, it was your experience. No one you share it with later can understand the impact of what it was like for you personally. In this case, your daughter, Gus, was the first person to experience her and then she shared that story with you and your wife. Well, whether you believe her coworker has a real ability to see beyond the veil, it's not clear to us that any harm could have come from this because if it somehow had, you certainly would have included that detail.
