Tonight's episode, The Haunted Firehouse. Well, this week's letter comes from a listener who spent time volunteering at a fire station with a reputation for unusual activity. It's a classic haunted location story, but with some interesting twists. It certainly is. Listener Ken Sanner Jr. recounts a range of experiences, from lights flickering and objects moving on their own, to more unsettling events involving disembodied voices and unexplained shadows. There's even a particularly strange incident involving a heavy metal door opening by itself on a windless day with witnesses present. It's always worth considering mundane explanations, you know, faulty wires, drafts, pranksters, the usual suspects and ghost stories. But Ken did mention attempting to record the events with a video camera, capture disembodied voices. And the sheer consistency of the reported events makes a purely random or coincidental explanation less likely in this case. That's right. And there's a compelling way to any collective experience. Multiple people witnessing the same anomalous phenomena always makes it harder for people to put aside, in my view, anyway. Yes. All right, man. Crank it out. When I was an active volunteer, I was a member of a fire department, which many people reported to have paranormal activity. There were many rumors of who the spirit was and why the station may be haunted, but none of the stories seemed to have much basis in fact or supporting evidence. Common experiences people reported included footsteps, disembodied voices, cabinets opening, pictures and lights falling from the walls or ceilings, and lights turning off and on. The first encounter I had was fairly minor. I had turned off the lights in a room one night while pulling ambulance duty, but when I came back moments later, the lights were back on. I was the only person in the station that night, and while not dramatic, it certainly raised the hairs on the back of my neck. There were several other times in which the other members of the department and I experienced minor occurrences. More than once, lights dropped out of the ceiling tiles, often one by one. Other times, pictures dropped either straight down off the wall or were thrown several inches forward. On one occasion, late at night, about a half a dozen of us set up a video camera in the administrative side of the building. We caught disembodied voices of two women talking and laughing, though we couldn't make out any particular words. There was only one woman with us that night, and there was no potential interference from TVs or radios anywhere in that side of the building. We know that the only people in the building were those of us who set up the camera. Several more times we tried the experiment, but we never caught any further sound or visual evidence. But the older administrative side of the building was always said to be the most haunted. The final two experiences to date that I had at this fire station were slightly more dramatic. One night, three or four of us were watching a movie in the crew room, again being the only people in the building. We heard footsteps go by a door and saw a shadow move underneath it. The shadow was moving towards a dead end, so when the person never came back and we never heard any of the other doors open, we got curious and went to see who was there. There was no one in any of the rooms or hallways in that small part of the building, leaving us baffled. My final encounter occurred one sunny afternoon in front of two witnesses and was the hardest to explain. I was talking to two people in the crew room when a metal door, not light by any means, opened about a third of the way and held open for approximately 30 seconds. There was a window in the door, and from where I was standing, I could clearly see that there was no one there. There was absolutely no wind, and none of us could explain this at all. Whether or not my old volunteer station actually is haunted or not, the place had a big impact on me personally and professionally. I made great friendships, which have endured for years, and learned a lot about the fire service and EMS. I also had my first encounters with someone, or something, who may have passed on to the other side, or may have never been on the side of reality to start with. Whatever happened then is still happening now. I keep in touch with several active members, and I have heard a few similar stories in the past few years. Voices and footsteps apparently still walk the halls there late at night. It seems that whoever, or whatever, is haunting this volunteer firehouse is here to stay. Okay, so there's a lot of run-in-the-mill stuff here. You always have to think about, oh, radon gas, bad wiring, it's an old building, you know, weird things are happening. And sure, you know, things creak, doors fly open. And I will say this, you know, my son and I went a few years ago to the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Pennsylvania, which is great. I love it, Lunatic Asylum. Politically correctness, would not let you call it that these days. Yeah, it was then. Yeah, but back then, you know, it was okay. I know, different times. We were up there, and I've talked about that on our main show, I should probably stop saying that, saying it so much. But we did, but we went up there and did a tour, it was an amazing tour. But in one of the buildings, we were in one of the scariest buildings where they held, like, the most dangerous people, you know, the Hannibal Lecter building. That had some common areas, and we were coming down through there, and there was a doorway, and there was a door, like what he describes here. It was a big, heavy door, and the whole tour group came through it, and it led out to a little courtyard where the prisoners, for lack of a better word, used to be able to go outside and walk around in the grass and whatever. And as Pink Floyd said, those lunatics are on the grass. So they would come out through there and do their thing or whatever. We all went down through that door, and it's in an alcove. It's totally protected on two sides by a large brick wall, and the door just slammed shut. I mean, slammed. And I would say that the door easily off the hinges must have weighed, it was a solid metal door, must have weighed 40 or 50 pounds. There was no way for wind to get to it because it was in an alcove, and it didn't have any kind of closing mechanism attached to it. It may have at one time in the past, but it was just a door on hinges. It didn't have, you know, one of those automatic shutting cylinders or whatever you call that stuff. And it just slammed. We all saw it. And that kind of stuff, when you're, I mean, you're the one that's done the lockdowns. I wasn't even on a lockdown. This was in broad daylight, but it was weird. And that kind of stuff is strange. But, like, what takes this to the next level, and this is something we've talked about our friend James Willis with, who's a skeptic that does a lot of investigations and has had some weird stuff happen to him, is the disembodied voices that they caught on the cameras. They set up the camera. Then they hear two women talking. They can't make them out, which reminds me of File 10. Like, you can tell it's talking, but you can't tell what it is. The idea that they got it, and then the fact that there was only one woman with them, and she was right there with them. She helped set up the camera. That's another thing we hear about with EVPs, electronic voice phenomenon, is that you hear voices of the people that are with you sometimes. Yeah. That can't be, that weren't on site in that moment, or your own voice. And actually, Ken, if you hear this, I'm super curious to see if you guys still have that video. We would love to get a hold of that, although that kind of stuff is the sort of thing that always disappears to time. You know, people are interested in it, then somebody puts it on a shelf, and then they sell their house, and then it's just gone forever. Right, it's also an official, it's an official, you know what I'm saying, it's a, not a residence, like, this is a fire department, so there may be restrictions on that, and, yeah. Well, they're not going to care about, like, I mean, at this, back at this point, too, in this, I mean, who knows when this is. I have this feeling it was years ago, but I don't know how long ago it is. Could be a Hi8 tape, it could be VHS, could be HD cam, could be anything, you know, so many different formats of cameras have come out. But, like, it would be interesting to hear that audio, especially now with the tools we have these days that allow us to enhance weird audio and try to get to the bottom of what's there. But it's a cool story. These events are interesting to me. Yeah, and this story seems familiar. I don't know if we had read this previously in going over Halloween submissions. There's something about this, and what I wanted to know then and now is what is the backstory? Who do they think it was? And, again, it's not that relevant, but it's just a curious backstory about who may be haunting the place and why. By the way, it was submitted for Halloween for 2023. Ah, okay. So when we were reviewing all that stuff, we would have read it then, for sure. Yes, that's why it's familiar. Yeah, that's why. So we knew we were going to use it at some point. But, look, any building, the ground, the outside space, your spirit's everywhere walking around, I believe. Yeah. So, speaking of firemen, so one of my good friends, I've talked about him before, now retired fire captain. But I got an EVP with the DR-60 in his car while we were waiting for burgers. Okay. Because he was just saying, like, I said, well, what did you do this? Well, I went on these ghost hunting trips, and I brought this. This is a little fun gadget. So we're just sitting in his car, and I got some, like you said, grumbling voices where you could tell it was speech, but couldn't make it out that clearly, especially just sitting in his car when it's kind of noisy. But, like, and I said, well, what do you think of that? In that this thing shouldn't have picked up anything. You know, radio's not on. It's, like, you know, none of the other factors. And he just said, like, why is it that my Honda is haunted? Like, why are you getting this stuff? And so, again, he's not, you know, has a mild interest in this, perhaps. But, you know, he's seen some odd things himself, but nothing too earth-shattering during his career. But his point was, like, well, we're not in a haunted house. Why is it picking up stuff here? Then it's, obviously, it's a broken recorder. Right. And so my point was, like, well, no, there's spirits everywhere. But more so, I think, in buildings with a lot of activity. We've often talked about this, people who know anything about ghost hunting and spirit activity know that places with a lot of emotion, or didn't have to be, but hospitals, churches, theaters, firehouses. And so my little anecdote, which, again, nothing that dramatic has happened to me where I can totally point to it. There's always been the doors left open, the heavy metal door, let's say, unmovable, usually on its own, left open for some doubt. And for me, when you were here in L.A., we used to like to dine occasionally at the Edendale Grill. Remember that place? Yeah, absolutely. I think that's our old beloved sound designer, Ryan. We first met him there for a meeting. Yeah, that's right. And so we love that place. It was an old converted firehouse in L.A., in that area of town. Back when part of the dining area was the stable for the horses that drew the fire wagons. Yeah, that's where we sat when we met Ryan. This is in Los Feliz on the edge of Silver Lake, kind of, right? Or not Silver Lake, sorry. It's adjacent, yeah, you could say generally East Hollywood. Yeah. And so terrific place, great food, great drinks. And that's that part where you're talking about, I think that's where the bar is. When you, it's not advertised, of course, but when you start talking to people, I think the people, especially people that work there is like, this place haunted? Like, oh yeah, yeah, it's haunted. So of course it is. My only thing that happened, I think before I started asking people about that is that I remember there is that main dining area and there's a little tiny courtyard or just an outdoor space that you have to walk to to get to the bathrooms in the back. Yeah. The way it's laid out. So there's a men's and women's and I went into the men's and there's a door there. It's not one at a time, I don't believe. I'm trying to think though, the important part of this is, did I lock the door behind me? And I can't remember if I did or not. Right. But I walked into it, of course, to use the bathroom. And as I was wrapping things up, there's a piece of frosted glass in the door. Yeah. And someone came up to the door and, you know, like a silhouette of a guy, I would suspect. I don't think I said anything like, oh, I'll be out in a minute, but he could obviously tell I had the water running and I'm washing my hands. And then the shadow passed. And just a few seconds later, I opened the door and there's no one there. Right. Now, here's the thing. It's like, okay, that's not concrete proof of anything. Could have been a guy who just like, oh, all right, it's busy. I'll just duck back into the bar. My immediate thinking, though, was like, well, if you have to use the bathroom, you would just, like, you would see like, oh, someone's in there. I'll just wait. It's not like, especially when you can see, you know, through the frosted glass that I'm probably wrapping up here. And also, I don't think I had the door locked. So, but like I said, I can't discount the fact that it was just some dude who walked up like, oh, someone's in there. I'll come back later. Right, right, right. But I opened the door immediately and there was just no one there. And it's like, huh. But sometimes, you know, and this has happened to me, you go to the restaurant, you go to the bathroom, and somebody is in there, the door's in, you realize it, you're embarrassed, and you try to take off super fast. Because you don't want to come face to face with the guy that you almost walked in on. Exactly. But that's like, usually there's a hallway where, you know, where the restrooms are. My point being that there was another little bit of a head scratcher was that I opened the door, there's that empty courtyard. For him to, he would still have been walking back to the main building area. You know, maybe he ducked over the fence. I don't think, you know, you've gotten to that, that embarrassed, but it was just odd. Like, oh, I guess the guy walked back and I didn't catch it, which is totally plausible. So nothing, it was a head scratcher, but nothing so undeniable, let's say. Whereas I've been on some ghost hunts and it's like, it's all somewhat subtle, but things you cannot deny. Yeah. The disembodied groan or the smell of roses or something that wasn't on your devices that people could say like, wow, your device is faulty. That's why, uh, you're expecting to see something. That's why you saw it. You were fully anticipating seeing something and then you did. That's just your, that's just your brain delivering on a promise. No, I've seen things happen, but they're, they're all kind of small and they're also little head scratchers. It's just like, uh, geez, at the, uh, Randolph infirmary, I believe that's where it happened. And there was a room that a young girl stayed in. She was like 12 to 14. So just kind of young, but she was, uh, staying there as a, uh, you know, out of charity, I think is, uh, she was an orphan and may have needed care. But people on the subsequent ghost hunts now will leave her dolls and toys and flowers and balloons. And I remember walking by it and I had my camera going and I don't think I caught this, but like somebody had been there on a ghost hunt lockdown, you know, the night before or a few days before. So there's a bunch of balloons in there and they're filled up. And then when I came back, you know, walked down the hall, made a loop, come back down the hallway and looked in the room again, the balloons are mostly deflated now. It was just odd that like, like I said, a head scratcher, because then you wonder, and again, I checked the footage and I didn't really take much video or any video of the balloons in any state, but like, weren't these blown up? These are blown up. I'm pretty sure. And then, like I said, you start to question your, your, uh, like everything I come across, you start to question, like, was I mistaken? Did that really happen? Was it in that state? That was weird. And then I've had it explained to me like, well, if there is a spirit manifestation, they can draw and manipulate the existing environment, make things colder. Somehow coming from a portal into our space has a profound physical effect and space and time and material. So it's just like, well, that was, that was odd though. And again, you looked, it's like, ah, dang it. I didn't really get a shot of what the balloons looked like before. Cause you're not thinking about it. Yeah. Yeah. So it's stuff like that. It's just kind of mild, like, but then another member of our team, uh, uh, our good friend, Jill, there were flowers that appeared that were not there. And like I said, there's only six of us. We walked down the hall. She had asked to be given some kind of message or sign regarding a question she had. We walked down the hall, we came back and suddenly there's a bouquet of flowers in the doorway of one of the rooms. Yeah. Now that I know, like no one brought flowers with them. I know everybody here. Right. There's three other people there, but they were with us the whole time. We walked back like, okay, I think that's a real manifestation. But again, people want to see flowers just appear out of thin air or drop from the ceiling or get hit in the face with them. And it wasn't that it was subtle, but like these weren't here. Well, that's the aportation thing. It's something that we've talked about in the cases of aportation where, you know, some, the, it was one of the stories. And I can't remember what the specifics of the story were, but on that series, Paranormal Witness that I love so much. Where the family's inside the house and the, the dad gets mad about this little porcelain thing on the bar and the glass doors open and he chucks it out way into the backyard angrily and literally turns around to where he had taken it off the counter. And it's sitting right there. I haven't seen a lot of them, but that was a season one. It doesn't make noise. It's just back. It's cheating time. It's like, it's amazing. Well, there's time and space. And I love that kind of stuff. Me too, because they're, and again, it's like, well, that's magic. Like, no, I, I do believe in this. Here's where I have the argument with the stage magicians who are trying to disprove this stuff or even that the big bang happened that came out of nothing. And I know that Stephen Hawking has an explanation for that, but like that to me sounds like magic. Something coming from nothing. The whole universe starts at a point. And I know that there's an explanation he had to come up with. We were saying like that doesn't make any logical sense, but here's my point about that. First of all, that is episode three of season one or season three. It's one of my favorite ones because it was so. The one I was just talking about. Yeah, exactly. Oh, wow. Cause it was a demonic. I'm impressed that you know that. Well, no, be just because I, I remember that always because it was this. That's a great woman. Yeah. It is a great series. It was so horrific and traumatic. And it was, uh, people say like, everybody says it's a demon. It's not a demon. And this one, like, well, this is something very powerful. And there's a photo of whatever it was. It's one of the freakiest photos you'll ever see of supposed spirit caught on, on camera, because it's just a smearing or trail of, it looked like the same image repeated a thousand times in this, in this kind of trailing motion. It's just, it's just wild. And that poor woman and her daughter, and I think her daughter's friend, and there is on video, the, the oven door slamming repeatedly, like bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. And they got that on video. Yeah. And people say, well, you can always dismiss all this. Like, yeah, it's eight that now it's AI or they rig that, or there there's wires there. It's like, okay, well, they're both really shook up on camera. So I guess they're good actors as well. And they just wanted to be on TV. Okay. But here, the reason for the cat though, was they were trying to appease the spirit or whatever it was that was harassing them. And it was like lighting little piles of toilet paper on fire, smearing peanut butter and food all over the walls in designs. Yeah. Like smearing peanut butter and then cheese it's in little designs all over the walls. And so they made the mistake of like, well, let's try and be friends with it. Like we're, we don't, we're not trying to hurt anybody. We're just trying to live here. And it's like, that's a mistake because now you're trying to commune with it. So they, they didn't know, but that's what the little porcelain cat was. They were trying to lit a candle and they set the cat out. It's like, well, here's a little gift for you. Like, we just want to be friends and just please leave us alone. It's like, no, you're trying to pray to it or appease it. And the guy who I think was a, I think he was working as law enforcement at the time, the boyfriend of the mother didn't like it. And he was like, I'm not having this crap in my house. Right. Threw it outside and it comes back. Yeah. And it not just comes back. He turns around and it's right where he picked it up from like a second and a half after he threw it way out into the back. Oh yeah. So that, that I believe has, can happen, has happened, does happen. In this case, the appearance or the manifestation of the flowers may have been what deflated the balloons. So that was what we were thinking before, because it was right outside the, I think it was right outside the door of the little girl's room. Cause I'm looking around the room, like what else appeared? It's like, I didn't see anything new other than now the balloons seem to be deflated. Right. Whereas before they were left and they, I remember them being blown up. And so it was explained to me like, well, the manifestation action, because on some level it's just physics. As we always say, as it's known with physics on the subatomic level, actions of subatomic particles seem like magic. They don't obey the rules of, uh, atoms and molecules and things much larger. Yeah. So we have, uh, quirks and, uh, nuance and all that good stuff. It's like they have rules of their own that we are not aware of. They just don't behave in the ways we would expect or can calculate. So yeah, in that case, something manifesting, it's, it's interesting in the case of the firehouse. Yeah. Sounds classic, classic stuff, classic hauntings, having to do with lights, things moving, doors slamming, multiple people seeing, but, uh, I do want to know what the story was. Well, Ken, thank you for sending your story. And it sounds like there's a definite permanent resident at the firehouse. It'd be interesting to do some research and see if the events there, especially since they're ongoing, can be connected to a specific former occupant of the land or a volunteer at the fire department.
