Tonight's episode, Black-Eyed Driver. In October of 2017, we did a series that resonated with so many people, we're still getting emails and comments on it to this day. And it was on Black-Eyed Kids. Yeah, like Shadow People and The Hat Man, Black-Eyed Kids are more well-known than a lot of paranormal mysteries. But the knowledge is surface level for most folks a lot of times. Not everyone knows the rules or what to look out for or expect if you're ever to see one. Right, but like a lot of classifications for paranormal phenomena, experiences don't always fit into the neat little box that your respective culture has prescribed for them. Which brings us to tonight's dead letter. It turns out that Black-Eyed Kids aren't always kids. And we've talked about that before. They can be, as we saw an infant in a stroller at the grocery store checkout line. And I believe that anecdote was in David Weatherly's book. Strange Intruders. Yeah, Strange Intruders. And then he's also had Black-Eyed Kids, I think. Oh, well, he's got a Black-Eyed Kids book too. Yes, sorry. Just pick up any book by David Weatherly. If you like our show, you're going to love his books. Right. There's a handful of anecdotes that will chill you to the core. But anyway, it's not just a story that tells us that if you pay attention, you can find lots of stories about Black-Eyed adults, just like in his book. So what exactly is this phenomenon? We cover that in great detail on Astonishing Legends. A lot of people think it's just creepypasta, but it's more than that. Just ask one of the most famous experiences of all time about it, journalist Brian Bethel, who we interviewed and is to this day a member of the Astonishing Legends private Facebook group. Yeah, which is fantastic. Didn't expect that, but we're proud and honored to have him. Yes, we are. Black-Eyed human beings, or sometimes just beings, have been spotted and reported on by people in every location, every walk of life, anything you can think of. So Black-Eyed kids, usually between the ages of, they'll describe as, you know, six or seven, eight years old to about 14, 15 are often described, but it turns out it could be anybody. That's right. So this dead letter might have you rethinking the Black-Eyed Kid narrative. And I believe it's your turn to read, sir. That it is. All right, so this one comes to us from Arthur. Arthur, thanks for sending this in. I just found you guys recently and love your show. I was listening to one of your back catalog items, and it brought up some real feelings. Please read below. I was about 25 years old, and it was mid-October, 1998. I was still living in the Bronx, where I was born and raised. I was driving home at about 8.30 p.m., back from visiting my parents, which I did at least once a week. My father had suffered a series of strokes over multiple years, so I always wanted to make time to go and see him. I'd driven this path between their apartment and the house where I was living. I'd stopped at a light on Waters Place and East Chester Road in the far right lane, waiting to make the right turn. In the Bronx, you cannot make a right on red. The road was pretty empty, which was normal for the time, and I felt like something was watching me. I looked to the left, and in the car, in the far left lane, one empty lane between us, was a person, in quotes, just staring at me. I do remember that their face looked very pale, but not quite white. Their eyes were completely black or empty, and they had an almost impossible smile. We stared at each other for what felt like an eternity. I felt immense dread, but could not look away. Suddenly, a song, self-esteem by the offspring, came on and snapped me out of the gaze. I looked up, and the light was turning from yellow to red. I zipped through the light. I did not see the other car turn left or move. The rest of the way, I continually watched my rearview mirror, expecting them to be following me, but they did not. I get home and tell my girlfriend, and future and current wife, the story. She thought I was joking at first, until she saw me pretty shaken up. I was 6'1", 290 pounds, and not easily shaken. She then mentioned that it was most likely a person, playing around wearing a Halloween mask, a story that she still sticks by, or an escaped mental patient from the Bronx State Hospital, right on Waters Place, as a joke. I was unable to sleep that night, something that I'd never have an issue doing, even today. The next morning, I had to drive to Edison, New Jersey, for a job for the first time. I was a machinist, and I worked as a contractor for multiple New York newspapers. This was the first time I was going to Edison. As I drove over the George Washington Bridge in the dark early morning, I felt that feeling of dread again. I had driven over that bridge many times before, and after, and many bridges around the country, but the George Washington Bridge at dark is the only one that still, to this day, gives me that feeling. While listening to your back catalog, I was enjoying the black-eyed kids while driving, until you mentioned the possible link to the smiling adults. All of a sudden, the dread feeling all came back. Have you ever heard of anything like this? I have included a quick drawing of her. Please excuse the drawing. Although I am an amateur artist and can draw pretty well, I never have the ability to draw her. I feel like it's just wrong to do so. I only can do it quickly and spend very little time on her. Well, I can attest that the drawing Arthur sent in with his story is pretty darn creepy. Well, guess what I'm planning to do with this one, Forrest, and people will already know this by the time they get it, but I think I'm going to make the drawing the image for this episode instead of our logo. You sometimes have these ideas, and then I think about them later and decide that they're probably not such a good idea. Now, being serious here- It's going to get people's attention. Think about it this way. It's like the time that, maybe it's somewhat related, who knows, but we were talking about somebody that we believe had a, you know, they felt that they did, and we had some people we trust who were psychic mediums look into it. I know people are rolling their eyes, but they had a lot of torment and family trouble, and between the investigations of the experiencer and their family and the people who are knowledgeable about demonology looked into it and found that an image was somehow coming up a lot in some various forms. Not exactly, but the design of it and the elements of it, and it was determined to be a sigil. And through some discussion, it was decided upon that this sigil, like this is the one that the experiencers were seeing or coming across somehow, and that it was tied to somebody, something not very good. So then you decided to make copies of it and put all over our Dropbox. And it's like, here it is. Hey, check this out. Let me email this. Yeah, and so for folks that don't know, a sigil is a magic symbol typically representing a specific intention or desire. It can also be thought of as a manifestation tool or a way to harness and channel one's energy towards a particular outcome. They're often used in rituals or other magical practices, and there was one left, in fact, on the floor of the basement at the Sally House, supposedly related to some people doing rituals there. Yeah, there was that, but then what we came across is that the people in charge of managing the Sally House had invited in an academic demonologist who then did some counter sigils to counteract some of the bad mojo there. And if you don't believe in any of that, like I said before, well, that doesn't mean anything. People often listen to just laugh at us, but, and they get exercise with their eyes rolling them. But hopefully we're entertaining nonetheless, but it works or doesn't really hurt. You've just expended a little bit of charcoal and some candle wax on the floor. But what Scott was talking about is that these are images that are created or given or the knowledge that is passed down from another realm, let's say, or higher beings to us mortals to affect some outcome. That the images themselves, creating the image, dispersing and displaying the image has power in itself. Right, right. And a fascinating tie-in I just thought about was some of the descriptions people have had about symbols found or coming from alien craft. And I guess aliens themselves. And that, you know, we have our 26-letter alphabet and the letters are symbols there, but with some advanced cultures, symbols on like their craft. And perhaps this ties in with Rendles from Forrest and the symbols seen by Penniston. And the symbols themselves are like code or have power themselves in that it's not just a painted letter on the side of something, on the side of a craft. Right. Or on a piece of paper that the symbols themselves have the ability to engage effect in our physical world here, that they have energy to them, that it's basically like, we talked about this before, like a series of writings where the letters are the code for like writing a computer, let's say, or a program. And the example I always got from the, like the carrot report, C-A-R-E-T, about the downed alien aircraft and the parts and the symbols found on them is that imagine taking a piece of paper, fold yourself up into an airplane and fly across the room. And you just write that down and the letters and the writing itself has the power to affect that change where then the paper folds itself up and flies across the room just because those symbols have been imbued with some kind of energy or power. So back to the point of you having an idea about taking a sigil image that should not be spoken of or displayed or passed around, I thought like, maybe that's not such a good idea to have in all of our digital forms here at Dropbox and like, hey, check this out. This thing's supposed to be evil. And it's like, okay, best not to maybe display that around. But in this case, in all seriousness, it's kind of creepy if our author, Arthur, you know, he says he can draw pretty well, although an amateur, he never really has an ability to draw her and it gives him the feeling that doing so is wrong. So he has to do it very quickly and just kind of get it out of the way, sketch it out and then be done with it. Now, you could say that just ties to the PTSD of his experience that was so creepy and real to him that he doesn't want to dwell on this in any form and just dwelling on that image just to sketch it out conjures up bad feelings. Right. Pun intended there. But the idea is that, yeah, I mean, it probably has no effect on us, but I think it does have an effect on him, just whatever that is. And like I said, I think that experience and then the later George Washington Bridge experience, the feelings, like there's something, I don't know if it's the spot, the location, the time of night, but it's a little bit of PTSD. Yeah. And we hear that quite a bit from people that have these experiences because, you know, I often talk about not having a visceral reaction to something strange going on. It's more of a curiosity mental thing with me, like, like that's weird. That shouldn't have happened. The physics don't make sense. And just kind of dwelling on that aspect, but other people who see these things, like it has a real gut reaction that a lot of times can't be shaken. And that to me is pretty interesting. And I'd be curious to experience that for a few seconds and then be able to be done with it and shut it off. Right, right, right. You don't want that following you around, but like, what does that feel like where that's the difference of seeing somebody in a Halloween mask? You know, like he said, his girlfriend and future wife was saying at the time, like, I think it's just somebody screwing with you, honey. You know, they're wearing a mask or I find the, the escaped mental patient aspect kind of funny. Like they're, they're driving around and scaring people. Like, and that's part of such an old folklore tale, like it's blaming it on escape mental patients of people in the woods creeping other people out or being part of a campfire tale. By the way, that book by David Weatherly is called The Black Eyed Children. It's in paperback now and there's a revised second edition and we highly recommend picking that up because if you like these kind of creepy stories, it's really got some good anecdotes in it and, and well written. But the stories that you read in there of how it affects people and of course the idea that, you know, people say like, well, it's people screwing around with those full sclera contacts, which are contacts that go over the, over the white part of your eye as well. Yes. Which they don't recommend you buying or, you know, you can easily buy them off the internet nowadays and they're a lot cheaper than they used to be and people, you know, they'll wear them for photos or Halloween parties and this and that, but still not recommended by your optometrist and eye healthcare professionals because it can scratch or damage your eye. Right. Then we wonder like, how prevalent is that? And I don't think it fits in every case because seeing a kid like that, yeah, that'll creep you out, but not to this degree. That's kind of what I'm getting at. It's like, there's something that is chilling to the soul that you cannot shake. It gives you nightmares and doesn't go away. So, you know, I don't think it's somebody in a mask. That would be refreshing and funny, but I mean, a creepy prank, but I've seen people driving around with masks occasionally and, but nothing like this where they were just pale with black eyes. there's another story that, and I can't remember if somebody sent it into us or if it appeared in the book or books that somebody was driving along also turn and saw some, I think it was a guy in a pickup who turned and had the black eyes and I can't remember if it was the smile or just anger. Sometimes it is just rage and hatred that they're projecting and which is, I don't know, it's creepier. The smile is pretty creepy as in this case, but the driver was, yeah, it had the same effect. They were just instantly chilled, filled with dread and foreboding, much more so than, I think, just seeing somebody with a cosmetic effect applied. It is interesting, this feeling that he got and then the fact that the feeling translates to the George Washington Bridge. So, and this is a bridge I'm super familiar with because as I've said on this show, I lived in New York for almost 10 years and I lived on the Upper West Side and the George Washington Bridge, I saw it every day. Which is where it is. It's on the Upper West Side. It connects the Northwest corner of Manhattan to New Jersey. It's an amazing bridge. It's huge. It's got, you know, double decks with lots of lanes going both ways. It's really quite something to see. And I'm super familiar with it and I looked at the spot where Arthur was when he had this encounter and it's about six miles away, which, you know, most people would be like, well, that's not very far and it's like, well, in New York City, it's going to be a 45 minute drive probably to get from where he was in the Bronx to what they call, all New Yorkers call, the GW. The GW Bridge for George Washington. But it's interesting to me that there's no connection between the actual encounter and the bridge. It's like, why is this feeling of dread and somehow a connection to this person or this being that he saw, it seems to be, for him, in his mind, connected some way and going over that bridge at night. And like you said, he's crossed a million bridges and, you know, Manhattan alone has something like 20 or 30 bridges all around it. I'm sure you're driving on bridges all the time when you live in the city. And so the question is, what is it about that particular bridge that's connecting him to this event that happened six miles away? That's really fascinating to me. Yeah, I do wonder about that. Like I said before, is it the location or just something that triggers that? I don't know if it's that spot and maybe something like that creature is lurking nearby and triggering that. but to Arthur's question where he says, all of a sudden, the dread feeling all came back. Have you ever heard of anything like this? We're talking about this possible link between black-eyed kids and smiling adults. Yeah. And what I can remember from the stories we've gotten is that there is a immediate PTSD feeling sometimes. You know, not everybody has that. I mean, it's an encounter they don't want to repeat. Some would like to just because, yeah, it creeped them out. It scared them. But it's such a unique feeling and outside of the normal range of human experience that they would like to feel it again because it was so extreme. You know what I'm saying? It's something that no other person usually ever has to experience or feel. So it's a unique feeling. And others, they were like, no, never again do I want to experience this because it, yeah, like I said, you can't shake it. And as we know, as we've learned, it's like with PTSD, the thinking about these things and reliving them, especially people who've had bad experiences in the military and especially during combat, thinking about it rings all the same bells, you could say, as actually being there the first time. Yeah. That all the same emotions, the physiological responses all come up and it's pretty darn close to actually going through it again. Right. So that all could happen again where it's just for whatever reason, like I said, he's not seeing this person or being, but somehow that spot that time of day is triggering that again. I'm not sure other than, yeah, maybe there's something nearby that is actually causing a field of a bad mojo to spray and you're picking up on it or maybe it's just, I don't know, whatever reason that memory happens to come back and it could be something else that you've experienced before and not realize it. So sometimes these experiences get kind of stuffed down and forgotten about until you kind of get to the root of them and then, yeah, it's curious. I don't know in that dark early morning why suddenly at that spot or on that stretch he gets the same feeling again. But as far as grinning people, the stories, well, that was another story by David Weatherly of coming around the bend famously and there was that circus, very tall, thin circus-dressed fellow with the impossibly wide grid and I can't remember who he was driving with but... That also happened on a road that I got lost on in Raleigh when I was a kid when I first started driving too. Well, you didn't see a grinning man, did you? No, but I saw a couple of limos parked in the middle of the road and people outside of them having a meeting. It seemed like a drug deal but like the road wasn't paved at that time. It's called Possum Track Road. Yeah. It's in Raleigh, North Carolina. I think now it's paved and the area's built up around it but when I was just out driving in my car when I first started driving just for fun but I've been on that exact same road where David Weatherly had that weird encounter and I had a weird encounter there but it didn't seem paranormal or supernatural or anything. Just drug dealing. Just bizarre. Yeah. With limos, right? It had a Miami Vice vibe, yeah and I made a quick U-turn and got out of there. You didn't calculate that being the same bend, was it? I don't think so. I can't remember really. I was so young. It was a long time ago and I don't even remember it being curvy really. I just remember it being kind of a straight gravel road in the woods. From what I remember of David Weatherly's story, it was they were passing around a wide bend. I think his friend was driving. This guy was standing kind of at the crook of the bend there just in the weeds, very tall, wearing very colorful clothing which I remember him describing something maybe like a circus ringmaster and having this really wide and possible grin and they round the curve there and I think Dave was like, we got to go back. He was like, I'm not going back. I am not turning around. Finally, he convinced him to turn around, make a U-turn, come back again to that same spot and he was gone, of course, but they found a patch of flattened grass where the guy was standing. Yeah, that's right. That's right. I remember that. So the guy did not have black eyes as far as I can remember the tail going, just that impossible grin which was non-human and he's described as there's the grinning man phenomenon but not often tied with black-eyed people, let's say. Yes. And I believe you're going to talk about it here is our first ever recorded piece of audio in an interview with Paula Pell and she describes the devil in the diner. Yes. Which also, you know, that point there we always make to people because it's like, it's 3 a.m. in a diner in New York, of course you're going to see weirdos. Right. But the idea was, which was similar, I don't think there were the black eyes, but it was very pale skin and that sickly grin, not an impossible grin, a regular grin, but was sickly and the knowing, much like Arthur's sighting of the woman here, that knowing grin of like, yeah, I'm creepy and different and you know it and we've made a connection here and I know the effect I'm having on you. And that's one thing I did want to say for us is like that living in a city like New York City and you know, there's cities like this all over the world, London, Tokyo and whatever, but where you're just, you're out in the mix with humanity. Yeah. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people, especially if you're commuting a lot and going in and out of the city and doing things and you just, you really get exposed to everything but it does make you wonder if these like large population centers are the ultimate place for a being like that, if it is a being, if you believe any of this at all, to kind of hide out in plain sight, you know, like the devil in the diner or this woman in this car. And I was going to make a joke about this was like, we got problems when black eyed beings have got their own cars now because usually they need a ride or they want to come into your house or whatever but now it's like they don't even need a ride anymore. They got their own vehicles. Yeah, but Scott, that's the difference. There are still some rules that apply to our physical society here in that the children don't have driver's licenses yet so that's why they need a ride and then the adults obviously can drive, you know, not making light of this but if you break down and take the anecdotes of course as being accurate, is that there are still some, well, one, they're found everywhere. We've heard stories of being in the city. There was one story of a woman in her high-rise apartment that was a high-security building and she was an executive in Salwa. That's right. One or two kids out on her balcony and she was startled because there's no way to get in. Yeah. Because there's a doorman, there's several security doors, you need a car key, all that kind of stuff and they just appeared on her glass balcony in her luxury high-rise. Yeah. They can be out in the sticks in a rural setting. That was one of the very first anecdotes I think that appears in some of the books about a young child and that sounds so much like a twilight zone of somebody out in the sticks seeing a young black-eyed boy and there was no description or label for it then. It was just a creepy kid that as of course they're walking back from church talking to a boy in that family who got his attention and wanted him to go somewhere you know or be invited back and the kid was so creeped out he ran. But in every case though there is that feeling like I said especially with black-eyed people and babies the one anecdote of the infant that's in the stroller or the toddler at the checkout line and the guy who was seeing it who was right behind him the baby turned to him had the black eye and he got the same feeling. It's not like oh that child may have some kind of birth defect it's like no that there's something there and the child already knows that he has that power or it has that power over adults and then you wonder does the mother know is the mother also a black-eyed person and I'm not sure but the other thing about it is that it's not always permanent we've heard many stories and a few from people we know where they were in some kind of relationship at least one where you know it wasn't good the person was struggling and during a fight or argument they claimed to have seen the eyes turn black and then it was like that was also accompanied by a feeling of like okay I need to get out of this this is beyond just a bad argument there's of course many other anecdotes where the black eyes come on one from the books that we were going to talk about I don't think I think we ran out of time to relay the anecdote was from someone who was a massage therapist and had this business client it seemed like a very normal regular guy kind of quiet and had been in there a bunch of times and then finally one I think there was one appointment that she had I believe he was a recurring customer and she you know didn't get any vibe off of him but like one time she was giving the massage and then he kind of sat up towards the end of it and he had the black eyes and it instantly came on that whole visceral feeling and she just like just go please just we're done here you don't know what I mean and just please leave and then he it seemed I think if I can remember correctly like he wasn't aware in the moment of the effect he was giving off or that his eyes were black he seemed a little like what do you mean I thought we're not done yet or something to that effect that and then maybe kind of got it and then he kind of gathered up his stuff and left the other thing I think that's really chilling about this one and you sort of alluded to this earlier when you mentioned the devil in the diner was just how the relentless long staring like looking at this being in this car like and who's just looking over and grinning with these black eyes it's like that is truly a chilling feeling you know and it does make me wonder like coming around to how Arthur's feeling about the George Washington Bridge and all of that if this thing if you believe any of this at all if it somehow put a psychological message into his mind transmitted this thing that became this concern about that one particular bridge or you know whatever happens that happened why the feeling would come back whenever he goes over it almost like a like a curse of some kind again we don't have enough information background wise as to why that specific area there and Arthur may not know himself about you know like he said he's never had a problem with that bridge he's drove over it many times but there's something about the early morning hours when he's trying to get to work and going over it that has that response and then you know the other thing that people often say about a black eyed kid's experience if you let them into their home or engage some kind of interaction or touch them that a lot of people end up with health problems that there is some kind of transference or draw of energy either imprinting of bad energy or drawing energy away from you that affects your health but that's quite common and so I don't know if there's a like you said there's some kind of spell or some kind of curse cast but people do believe that if you have more of an interaction with them or you invite them in in many cases that there's an effect a lingering effect but it doesn't happen to everybody in their experience a lot of people will have a fleeting passing glance or interaction or just seeing them and you have that creepy story to carry with you but it didn't affect you in any other way so yeah there could be some transference of whatever this thing's energy is into the person and maybe that's part of the grin and the locked stare is that moment of transference yeah something's imprinting over or drawing that from you you know what I'm saying there's a because there is the idea that some people have who have experienced this or study these kinds of things is that it's a little bit about energy as well drawing upon human energy and fear energy and that's you know we've talked about that since the beginning shadow people and whatnot and that's right bad entities and they feed off of the energy given off by a very powerful emotion of fear so could it be something like that just fear confusion bewilderment and or they just that's their way of playing a prank yeah yeah but getting back to like it's like with a businessman I think sometimes maybe in that relaxed state or caught unaware they reveal their true nature you know the eyes are the windows of the soul kind of thing and the black eyes came through whereas normally he suppresses that and so that was one thought about that is that yeah that relaxed state I can't remember how that was revealed like either he sat up or she turned the lights on and and but she wasn't meant to see that and I think as it was described if I can remember he wasn't meaning to show that side of himself and then sometimes that side is meant to be shown for the effect I think yeah well whatever it is we really appreciate Arthur and others who have had this type of experience sharing these stories because the other thing is that you're not alone as we always say with these things and I think sharing is one of the most important things we can do like any kind of traumatic experience so we really appreciate you sending this one in and if anything else develops or you remember something please contact us Arthur and let us know
